Richard E said last week there would be no 1:43 Motor Chronicle this week because he is at York.  To get my fix of 1:43 medicinethis week, I played with some of my cars and trucks last night.  I figured maybe there were other addicts suffering withdrawal, so I thought I would share.

I model 1955 on my layout.  Sometime back I replaced most of the cars in my downtown area with cars from the late '60s, instantly transforming "the look" from 1955 to 1968.  It was quite amazing how just changing the cars changed to look of the time so much!

I thought I would do the same thing backwards, to 1941 - just before the war.

Here is a view of my layout as normally set up: late 1955 - early 1956

 Slide1

Here, that same area in 1941.  Yes, it looks sort of 1941ish, but there is something missing.

Slide2

Ah, yes, I know!!  Need to set color amount and saturation both to -100%!

Slide3

My favorite car-related vignette on my layout is these two friends with sports cars talking.

I had updated them to 1968, too.

Slide4

So here they are in 1941 . . .

Slide5

Veranda Turbine always drives something exotiv.  A Chryslter Thomas Specialin '56, a Dual Ghia in '68 . . .

Slide6

And a Duesenberg in '41.  John Waye and Dean Martin are impressed.

Slide7

Wow!  I like this . . . . it could be right out of a 1930s movie . . .

Slide10

Uh oh!  forgot to change the cars inside the dealership!  Oh, well . . .

Slide11

A rumble seat is useful in so many ways . . . .

Train guys that are car guys too rely on cars to help set the era more than the non car train guys!! What others do on their layout is up to them.....but it does bug me when a really nice layout the builder say is set in 'May 23 1952' and there are cars from the 70's and 80's era! You have some great scale cars and one 1/1 IIRC!!

Lee your layout always is a treat to see. The time warp is impressive.

There is one thing that caught my eye that others might find useful.

Speed limit signs changed after 1947 with the establishment of standardized regulations and guidelines.

This is what a pre- 1947 sign looked like:

Post 1947 is what we see today:

I like it! I thought about having a shelf layout with tracks and buildings around the wall and different towns from different eras all connected by the track. I may still try that.

"Uh oh!  forgot to change the cars inside the dealership!  Oh, well . . . "

Just consider them "cars of the future."

Thanks for the imaginative post!
