Does the end of the spring without the hole have two prongs on the end?

On my locomotives, the hole of the spring goes over the round metal stud just forward of the front pickup shoe.  The springs should curve upward away from the track. On my locomotives there are two prongs on the forward end of the spring that fit on either side of the vertical shaft of the front truck.  The vertical shaft fits in the crescent shaped hole in the sheet-metal bracket that is located just forward of the engine in your third photo.

Secure the spring to the truck, insert the truck in the crescent hole, align the hole in the spring and the hole of the truck over the round metal stud.  Then secure both with a horseshoe retaining washer TS-70. Make sure the spring fits over the stud first, then the truck, then the washer.

Good Luck
