I have a mint 1989 Lionel Amtrak GG1 passenger set which I ran for first time yesterday. The passenger cars have been mint until yesterday when I decided to run the set but I have a problem with the wheel sets. The cars have so much rolling drag and after oiling the axles ( the wheels are fixed on the axles) and still has a lot of drag. I test pulling the cars with my fingers and felt like it took at least bit more than a pound to pull it as my GG1 has hard time pulling the 8 car set on 072 curves. I am looking for some tricks or tips in fixing it at least lowing the drag so the engine can pull the train. Will switching to postwar wheel sets (wheels spins freely on the axles) be a better choice ? I REALLY liked the set, can you help guys ? Surely someone knows how to fix that ?
