Hello All,
Thought you might enjoy these photos that I took back in 1999. This was the Artrain 1999 Artistry In Space tour. The train was parked on a Union Railroad Munhall yard siding adjacent to where the old USS Homestead Works once stood. All four of the corrugated cars are Budd built cars. Two of them are ex PRR dining cars, one is an ex NYC baggage/dorm car and for the life of me I can't remember what the fourth car was. The caboose is an ex Detrout, Toledo & Ironton. Damlier Chrysler was a big sponsor with support vehicles, banners, flags and a couple of Vipers pulling away as I arrived. The train had just arrived and the staff were still setting up, so I didn't tour the display. The big blue building still under construction is Marcegaglia Steel, an Italian company, that just started production of stainless steel pipe/tubing along with nickle/alloy products that summer. Part of the building being used is the old USS 48" mill which was still steam operated into the late 1970's!! Just found out that this Marcegaglia plant has been sold to Synalloy Corp/Bristol Metals LLC this April. Forgot to mention that the mill structure in the far background in the few of the photos is the remnants of the Carrie Blast Furnace.(tours are still given there) This was on the North side on the Monongahela River, opposite the Homestead Works. The steel was brought over a railroad bridge in torpedo cars/sub cars(commonly known as hot metal cars) to Homestead and down to the open hearth for processing.
