I believe that early CTT issue with Phil Klopp, IMHO the Michaelangelo of O Gauge model railroaders, as the cover story was the 2nd, not the 1st, issue of CTT. I have  that 2nd issue and will try to remember to find it and take a picture of it and post it in here later. I think it was in 1988.

Also, IMHO, OGR and our new publisher, Alan Arnold, are far superior to CTT and those in charge there.

Just before I first joined this Forum, Alan extended me the courtesy of discussing something important with me; the powers that be in CTT did not even reply to my emails.

LOL, Arnold

Arnold, you are correct.  Thanks.  Tough to remember back that far.  Dennis, CTT is a magazine that bulks up with reprinted pages from old Lionel repair manuals.   Nothing of interest to myself.   It does not float my boat.  I read OGR and do not need any other magazine.  ALL the people involved with OGR are train people.  It does not get better than that.

I purchased that first issue at a shop in Salt Lake City for $75 back then...

Then a few months later I picked up about 5 years worth at a train show for $50 I think it was including #1 and every issue forward from there! Sold some of the very early issues for $15 - $20 each so I came out OK

Have one now still.

I once sold a copy of that premier issue for $70. Those were the days.

And several years ago at a train show in the Detroit area I steered a buddy to a Premier CTT Issue at the other end of the spectrum.  He had been lamenting that it had been on his search list for some time...unwilling to pay the premium prices.  I spied boxes of railroad magazines under a sellers table, about diagonally across the aisle from my buddy's table.  A quick flip through the top several mags revealed the Premier Issue.  The box was marked "All magazines 50 cents each".

I suggested my buddy, Jack, go over and take a quick look through the box...with a wink.

Made his day!

BTW...IMHO, that's what they're really worth.....including my own.  In fact, nowadays old hard copy magazines seem of little more value than something to hold the house down in a strong wind/tornado.

It looks like nothing has changed.  People are still making unprofessional comments about anyone other than OGR.  I subscribe to all the train magazines and each has it's strengths and weaknesses.  Why can't we be more civil in our discussions?

So Art, let me start by saying I would fight for your right to express your opinion. You have done that and I respect that,

I will also fight for my right to express my opinion. Here is what happened. I wrote a song about Model Railroading  and made a video of Phil Klopp’s  magnificent layout. Phil, who has exquisite taste, loved my song and let me have it play in the video of his layout. I emailed my video/song to CTT in October at Phil’s suggestion, and CTT never replied.

Then, at Phil’s suggestion, I emailed OGR about my video/song and they replied right away and I was even able to have a 30 minute telephone conversation with Alan Arnold. I explained that I’m looking for no money for my video/song, but only interested in possibly have it help promote the Greatest Hobby in the World. Alan was very helpful and recommended this Forum to me. I am very grateful to him for that.

So I’m sorry if you think I’m unprofessional, but I will say categorically that OGR is my favorite model train publication, and CTT is OK, but I am not renewing my subscription with them ever.

LOL, Arnold.

PS: thanks Art, for giving me an opportunity to get up on my soap box. Also, I look forward to meeting you one day, maybe in York.

Chugman, you are spot on.  Every model train magazine has something to offer. There is no reason for disparaging comments about CTT.  I have subscribed to both since 1988 and enjoy them both thoroughly.  Baseless criticism strikes me as juvenile.

Together CTT and OGR make a pretty good magazine.  My interests lean further towards the coverage in CTT but that's a matter of personal taste.  Both magazines are good at what they do.

I have had positive interactions with Roger Carp at CTT and both Alan Arnold and Allan Miller at OGR, no negative interactions with any folks at either publication.

A very good salesman once taught me that you don't make many sales from denigrating the products of your competitors; the most effective selling method by far is to emphasize the positives of your own product.

I'm with Chugman.

Well stated Pete.

OK guys....just found out about this thread.  The topic sure deviated rather quickly into something less than what we like to see.  CTT is a fine publication and I have subscribed to it since its first issue...When I first started in this hobby, I knew very little about what was available in terms of magazines.  Heck, I remember being very excited when I found out about CTT and holding that first issue in my hands!  Later I found out about O Gauge Railroading Magazine and so I had to have it too!  I see the two magazines complimenting one another with a different emphasis on content...nothing wrong with that!

Now, because I believe that the OP got what he was looking for or at least a commitment from some of the posters to get him that cover picture, I will close this thread as there is no need for it to go downhill any farther!
