I have pulled out my 2012 Southern Crescent set which has not been run for a while.  As I ran the set the couplers broke.  This happened to three different couplers.  Is this possibly zinc pest that I have read about here but never witnessed.  As I worked with the cars to understand the issue better I found that the truck were literally disintegrating in my hands.  In the end I had a sizable handful of plastic & metal pieces and springs.

I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion for replacement trucks that I could use to salvage the otherwise handsome rail cars.

Thanks and Happy Holidays to all

Dick

I've had several trucks on these cars break parts with zinc pest as well. I'll have to go back and check the rest. I have some extra cars to use for spare trucks, but I'm not sure what shape those are in, either. On my to do list. The zinc pest problem with the heavyweight trucks in these series of cars has been discussed before. My recollection from the last time I looked at these cars was that it wasn't going to be easy to take them apart and change the trucks.

Not to start a flame war here, but, I own the Lionel NYC heavyweghts and have had to replace several of the trucks. The problems started within a few years of purchase and Lionel never made any attempt to set things right. OTOH, I own several MTH heavyweights and the trucks, while not as detailed as the Lionel's, have  never required replacement. If you're not in too big a hurry, wait for the Lionel 1/2 off parts sale and stock up.

MTH passenger cars are not defect free either. Premier cars made around 2005 had major problems. MTH would replace them if you sent them your broken trucks.
