I just bought this 2037 engine and the lettering font doesn't look like any other 2037 that I've see online. Does anyone know why this font is different than most that I've seen. It is all original, not repainted.

It appears to be transfer numbering, poorly done. I have an original 2037 shell if you need one. Contact me via email (see my profile).
So does that mean this shell is not original or there were new numbers put on and original shell?
The shell is from Lionel, but appears to have had rub-down numbers put on the cab. The numbers don't match what I see on other 2037s. The shell may or may not have been repainted. I can't tell from the photo.

Thanks, I'm not sure what "rub-down numbers" means. I'll let you know if I'm interested in the shell that you have. At this point (I just got into trains) I think I'm satisfied with this because it is in good condition. I started with a No. 242 but that engine was boring so I bought this 2037 off of ebay. I wanted something that smoked and had magnetraction and this one's got both.
Your engine also took a dive to the floor and bent the cow catcher down. That may well be problem as it can short to the center rail. Be sure and check that. I would not worry any about the numbering, its not a valuable engine anyway. You may need the shell Jim has because you generally cannot bend cast metal back into shape.

I think he is talked about dry-rub press on lettering. It's a type of decal that you press on dry, transferring only the lettering, not any material around them, onto the surface. When done right it looks like original paint, but it is usually rather delicate and easy to scratch, etc.
The font on your engine appears to be the same as mine, which is a known original.
It's possible I'm missing something, though.
If your steamchest is bent beyond repair I have a spare if you need one.

Thanks brr! I appreciate your input. Is the "steamchest" the same thing as the cow catcher? Please excuse my ignorance, I am brand new to the hobby and trains in general.
Thanks,
Dave
Cowcatcher's good enough. It's what I usually call it. You might be able to straighten yours if its bent, but if your unsure I have a good one that I don't need.

That is why I just said cowcatcher. Either way, you get the point.

The steam chest and pilot (cowcatcher) can be changed, there are two screws that hold it in place, after you remove the front truck. They are available from reputable parts dealers such as Rich Sappelli (shameless plug).
