For what it’s worth, I jotted down the entire consists for the steam train both when it went to and from Ogden. The whole consist changed on departure and I’m not sure where the first consist went.

Cheyenne to Ogden: 4014, Jim Adams, 844, Joe Jordan, 8937 (SD70ACE), Art Lockman, Howard Fogg, Lynn Nystrom, 207 (power), Willie James, Omaha, City of San Francisco, Overland, Idaho

Ogden to Cheyenne: 4014, Jim Adams, 844, Joe Jordan, 2650 (ES44AC), Art Lockman, Howard Fogg, Lynn Nystrom, Columbine, Challenger, Promontory, Green River, Walter Dean, City of Denver, 2066 (Power), Little Rock, St. Louis

Question; What is the significance of the names? Is the 4014 named "Joe Jordan"? I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. The closest the UP comes to me is Memphis TN. I am in Nashville.

4014 is the engine number, as are 844 and 2650, the others are the names assigned to the cars by UP.

Bobbyd,

I guess I was thrown off by the order of the consists from front to back. They obviously had 4014 on the point, and then, going by your list, they had a car named "Jim Adams", then they had the 844, and after that another car named "Joe Jordan" and so on down the train. I would have expected both engines to be running coupled to each other on the front and then all the cars behind them. The people riding it the Jim Adams cannot move through the rest of the train. Of course, this is NOT a criticism, just an observation. We are fortunate that UP put this event on for us.

Jim Adams and Joe Jordan are extra water tenders, a must since all the on-line water towers were pulled down many years ago. So 844 is indeed coupled immediately behind 4014's 2nd tender.

He did a great job clearing that up for you, I was clear on that.

And "no stupid questions" here, that's how we all learn something!
