Did you guys watch the video of 4449 this past Monday?

It had some audio dubbed in explaining stuff by Hot Water (Jack W.) from the forum. He described the communications in the cab. Beautiful scenery on the BNSF Columbia Gorge tracks.

The main narrator described the history of the engines and other details. I didn't realize there were other different engines for that train in different areas of the country?

Joe,

Looks like I missed a good show; I always like to see pictures of this train.  I have the complete K-Line AFT consist (plus some extra cars I'm building to complete the train) as well as two of the three steamers that pulled it, the MTH GS4 and the T1.  I would really like MTH, Lionel, or 3rd Rail to make the T&P 2-10-4 Texas in AFT colors so I'd have all three.

Did they mention in the show that two BN diesels, a U30C and a SD40-2 in their bicentennial colors, pulled the AFT for a short time when 4449 was being repaired?  Sometimes these shows miss that little known fact.  I would really like Lionel to make this BN #1876 SD40-2 to go with Lionel's earlier BN #1776 U30C BN bicentennial release.

I don't get RFD on my cable. But I have the DVD of the show anyway, and I saw that trip as it actually ran and was lucky enough to see (and ride behind) 4449 under steam twice in that paint job.

It was amazing to see 4449 on Freedom train colors again, same as I saw it when I was 7 years old. Sometimes, you can go home again!

Wow. That is cool Lee.

The engine and tender were painted in that scheme. It mentioned that the weather was so foul, they didn't get the extra tender painted fully. Someone added the "Let's Roll" to the sides of that extra tender's all black paint job. That hit me kind of tuff, even now. I was at the site of the 9/11 national memorial in Pennsylvania where the plane came to rest. Really moving to me.

They did mention something about a delay caused by the #4449 Ron.

What does THAT mean?

I didn't hear why? Must have broke then?

Something broke? I sure don't remember THAT. Please try to provide clearer information.

HW,

Not sure if 4449 was in for repairs or normal maintenance, but the BN diesels "pulled the AFT to Colorado Springs, CO, Cheyenne, WY, and Billings, MT before the 4449 steam locomotive caught up with the train just north of Ogden and pulled it the rest of the way to Salt Lake City," from the American Freedom Train web site.

CAPILOT,

AFT 4449 had to have some high flanges on the drives attended to, while in Omaha. After the work was finished, the UP was gracious enough to doublehead 4449 with their 8444 westward in order to take over her normal duties on the Freedom Train. Obviously photos of that special move are extremely rare. I know of only one color photo of the famous doubleheader, and THAT was taken by Doyle McCormack himself, during a stop out in the middle of nowhere.

They finished the inspections in 2015 I think.  The photos are from the 2009 trip back from Michigan to Portland.  I think the yard photo was Fargo. We spent a whole day there in the yard.  All the BNSF guys wanted to stop and see the engine.   Some of the guys climbed out and took photos while they were doing crew changes.  They would pull up and pose the freights next to it. The river one was on the way into portland.   If you want to see more I have a shutter fly page with misc train photos.
