Hi,
I just picked up a Lionel 6440 flat car with the plain vans. The car lacks the metal mounting frame as it is the 1963 version. How do folks keep the vans from sldiing around? I have not seen any references to elastic hold down bands or such.
I am thinking about utilizing string to act as a tie down.

They came with just Rubber bands.
You might want to try using a 9120-7 wheel chock to at least assist in keeping the vans on straight. It should plug in to the stake holes in the deck. You could also try to locate a steel retainer ramp off a junked/broken 6430.

You may want to go to a craft store and buy a roll of silver string and use it, looks like chain. Mount the string to the axle and under the car carefully so as not to interfere with the truck assemblies.
