Dear Fellow Trainees:

I am positive that in one of the guide books, either Greenberg or TM, I recall seeing a sketch of a proposed James Bond train.  I seem to remember it being on a soft cover book in black and white going back to the mid 1960s.  It was obviously never made.  Unless I am really getting confused, I seem to also recall information about AC Gilbert doing a James Bond car racing set.

Does anyone remember which book?

thanx

Puzzling that Lionel did not hook up earlier to the James Bond juggernaut earlier after the success of both Goldfinger and Thunderball.

Interesting that 1970s artwork includes an 007 Missile Launcher from the late 50s.

I would love to see a 50th Anniversary Goldfinger Mintcar and a Thunderball aquarium car.

thanx to everyone for their leads.

Catwoman of course.

Why this was never done?  Same reason that Lionel originally never did any NYC Subway cars, I was once told "niche market".  Obviously Mike Wolfe felt differently.

P.S.  who names their profile after a potted plant from Mad Magazine?

What the heck, I will throw out my favorite James Bond story.  I was being babysat by the mom of another kid on my block.  All the guys on the block were going to a triple  James Bond movie fest afternoon in the summertime.  Goldfinger, Dr No & From Russia with Love.  The babysitter decided to let her kid go to the movies, but I couldn't.  That didn't make sense to me, so I went anyway.  I would have been a fool to miss three James Bond movies for the price of one.  I think my mom tried to yell at me about it, but really couldn't.  Who's another woman to show her how to raise her kids?  I never regretted that move.

Why not, indeed.   Bond was quite a sensation in the 1960s and wouldn't be a "niche market" in the way that subways and trolleys might be viewed.

You forgot Barry Nelson, who played Bond once in a 1954 CBS telemovie, "Casino Royale".

POW/MIA YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN

William 1:  The scene with Rosa Klebb trying to kick Bond with the poisoned stilleto shoes was in the hotel room in Venice, the fight scene on the train was with Red Grant and a garrotte/wrist watch.

Trainphreak:  The mintcar and aquarium car sound like a winner.

Jumijo:  Don't forget Woody Allen as Jimmy Bond

All "Bondage" fans:  The Blu-rays come out soon.

(My favorite: On Her Majesty's Secret Service w/ Diana Rigg!)

More James Bond Trivia.

Many technological icons made their public debut in Bond films (keep in mind the production lead time prior to the release date.) These are the few I remember.

  • The 1964 Ford Musting prototype was used in the "beauty shots" in "Goldfinger" (a replica was cut up.) The Aston Martin DB5 also made it's debut in the film as it was released in 1963 during the filming (the prototype was used.) I don't care about the machine guns, I want the passenger ejector seat option.
  • The Autogyro (Gyrocopter) went public as "Little Nellie" in "You Only Live Twice"
  • The "Wetbike", predecessor to Jet Skis in "Spy Who Loved Me." The Lotus Esprit Turbo also made its debut.
  • The hot little boat with the big Chevy V8 in "The World is not Enough." The BMW Z8 also made its debut in that film.
  • The BMW Z3 in Goldeneye.
  • The Aston Martin Vanquish in "Die another Day." BTW, I'm glad they went back to Aston-Martins. The BMW's seemed so common. In So Cal. you see a lot of high-end cars, but not a lot of Aston-Martins.
  • The Honda ATC90 in "Diamonds are Forever" A friend of mine had one of those things and it was fun to ride, but squirrely -- you had to lean like a sidecar passenger to keep it from flipping over.
  • Some question about the hang glider in "Moonraker" but there's no argument that the deployment was over-the-top.

"Skyfall" is coming. Be on the lookout for the new toys.

The homing devices for tracking vehicles / people in the Aston Martin DB-5 in Goldfinger seems like a predecessor of today's GPS systems me thinks.

I remember the very first digital watch was shown in one of the movies starring Roger Moore (Spy Who Loved Me???).  It had a red face and you had to touch the button to see red letters over a red background.  I had a client who was the head of cardio-vascular surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC and he had one that cost $2000.

Value today, zippo, as in the lighter, Felix that is.

I'm good with leaving out the machine guns but how about the other features...

  • Rear shield to protect the rear window.  (Hey...  road rage is getting worse!)
  • Tire shredders.  How else are you going to pick up those hard to get women who are completely focused on killing to avenge their sister?
  • Oil slicks and caltrops.  You can never tell when those bad guys are trying to follow you to a secret train sale.
  • Rotating license plates.  After using your other accessories, you'll need this to throw off the cops who are really ticked at having some "expendable" bad guy thrown through their windshield by an ejector seat.

I had the Corgi toy with all the features but was too young to take good care of it and  it eventually disappeared with my "junk" toys during a parental culling.
