Hello all,

This car took a spill and unfortunately broke apart , the complete hub assembly had to be replaced along with a few other parts. This car is actually an engineering marvel, it's amazing the  technology that went into this. I will do my best to explain the pictures as i post them.

PICTURES TO FOLLOW SHORTLY

Thanks for looking, Alex

Good call on swapping the LED's, that's an option I might consider.

I haven't tried it on my cranes, but on some lights I've used a quick (and lazy) method to change the light and used a yellow marker to tint the lens. Cutting and inserting a small piece of tinted plastic might be worth trying as well. Not as good as changing the LEDs, but if you have a lot of wrecks and can't afford any downtime ......

Why would they put purple in them?

Don't know, but a lot of their LED lighting at the time looked very blue. These were the worst though, looking almost light purple for some reason.

The first gen LEDs were bluish. Later they became known as cool white. Warm white LEDs became more widely used to emulate the real bulbs in steamers (IMO). There's even a white-white LED that could be used.

For some reason, Lionel chose to stick with the cool white version? I have to believe it's because they were cheaper.

I also wish the cab drive was easy to disengage so that it could take sharper curves. It does have some slack but not enough.

@JohnActon Lionel lists the minimum diameter as O31.  Are you implying that they lied to us?   Seriously, in your experience or anyone else on this thread-- what's the smallest curve it will get around in stock form?

I ran mine on Atlas 045. Boom hangs out pretty bad but didn’t derail!

Hello all,

Ed, luckily it didn't need to be re-strung . Just needed a few lines adjusted.

Rapid Transit Holmes, I'm not sure what that is on the gears. Maybe someone else can chime in and shed some light on this.

Bob, you can use your crane , just make sure of two things. Don't ever turn it up side down and make sure there's always tension on the strings if you had to.

DAVE NYC HUDSON , It was a bit of a task taking this unit completely apart. Very tedious.

GRJ, restringing this isn't fun either lol

Paul, better off with the Acela's lol

Big truck Pete, my pleasure

Susan Deats, my pleasure

Thanks, Alex

I would not doubt that the trucks will swivel enough for it to take O-27 curves (have not tried ) but if there were a simple way to disengage the cab gear-train so that the cab/boom could swivel freely.   Then the boom could  be hooked to the crane tender, staying centered, rather than hanging WAY out on curves. If you have concentric multi-track curves the boom is in danger of hitting anything on tracks or structures etc  outside of the track the crane is on. What if the trucks had sensors where they pivot on the chassis that could feedback to the cab/boom drive and electronically keep the end of the boom centered when rolling down the track. How Cool Would That Be !   Anyone ever own a linear tracking turntable ?      j
