As far as I know, all postwar wheel chokes (landing gear) were die cast metal.
Here is an article on trailers. I find it rather interesting, with some details of which I was not aware.
I read that article .. and from what I am reading they should come off BUT....I have the white vans that I bought which are glued on.. before I bought them I check with over three vendors offering them for sale and they all said Lionel would of had them glued on so far No body has any that are not glued on .. does anyone in their collection have the white vans which I think are the type 8.. that have removable tops thanks again ..DAniel
I have had plenty of Lionel trailer vans pass through my hands. Some were glued, others were not.
When the roofs are glued in place, there is no way to tell whether it was done at the factory, or by an owner.
Heck, before I started collecting, I glued on a few roofs myself.
Don't you think its odd that three (or more) vendors at a train show gave you an answer, yet I am the only respondent given the audience of this board? This is a somewhat obscure subject.
I'd go by the article. Tandem Associates seems to put in a good effort to keep their site accurate.

Yes.. Back in the 80's I called TCA and Greenberg I told them I had a late frame 616 with a phipips front screw I got New in the box of a private party.. They told me at the time it was a switch along the way and Lionel never would of made it that way .. Turns out in the 2000 year or so the new books now report it as a variation.. I am looking for a 6810 and each vendor also says they are glued on ... also...DANiel

Sure, accepted information gets revised from time to time. A bunch of new information surfaced when LTI auctioned off its factory and let a cabinet full of records go.
Still, don't you wonder where these vendors are getting their information?
Since I keep a fairly low profile, most vendors at train shows and stores take me as a newbie. Some of the stories I am told by these folks in order to secure a sale are shameful. Sometimes there isn't even a sale involved, just a vendor showing off his (lack of) knowledge.
