They had an ad for the NY state lottery during an Olympic broadcast the other night, and in the commercial ( I believe it was cash for life) you see the guy with a layout, which I believe was 3 rail O (from the size of the trains and also the transformer, looked like an MRC transformer), and him running his trains with the caption something like "what you can do with your life now that you are not working" or some such.....haven't found it on you tube and only saw it that once.

I saw that, too, a couple times, and enjoyed that having trains was presented as a measure of having a good time if we had plenty of time and money on our hands. It was a good looking layout , too. what I could see in a flash or two.

I wonder if it doesn't present the image that we have to win the lottery in order to enjoy this hobby?

I took it more as "you can quit your job and spend time on fun things you REALLY want to do."
Wonderful Edward Hopper "Nighthawks" feel.
Love that commercial but would not have watched all the way through if BIGKID had not told us how it ended.
What, me worry?

Thanks for the link. Looks like an HO scale layout.
Anytime our hobby is shown on national tv, I think we, and the hobby, are benefitted. It was a rather long lead into a rather short depiction of a nice looking layout. Needed more "train time".
For the past few days, there has been a toy expo in NYC at a huge exposition building presented as news on several local News channels. These news items spent a considerable amount of time showing the camera around the expo hall. Not once did I glimpse any trains. Maybe I missed them? Doubtful. But there were plenty of flying whirl-a-gig-type gadgets and huggable toys, that I noticed.
Lionel is at Toy Fair, but TV goes for new and flashy - they don't see the innovations in toy trains because they've passed the booth to look at this year's flash.
Sadly 2 years ago tv was all overMegtracks at toy fair, because - it was new and flashy.
New and flashy, but nobody bought it.

Yep, it was HO, the transformer was an MRC it looked like, and that confused me *lol*. I realized the point of the commercial was kind of Twilight-zone ish with tinges of Edward Hopper, and it is supposed to be shot on the layout (explains the lack of people!). Kind of like the old Twilight Zone with Barry Nelson stuck on some alien kid's train layout. I had a laugh when it said you could enjoy being a kid again, I would guess the people doing the commercial never ran into the rivet counter crowd, if they had they would know not to call it "child's play" or the like *lol*
