Hi -

I am seeking advice.  My father passed away over 10 years ago leaving a massive (25'x25') o-scale layout in suburban Denver, CO.

Features include:

- multiple levels

- hand laid track and switch construction from brass rail, 2-rail

- 50+ freight cars from pre-war to current models

- 10 or so locomotives. Some Lionel conversions, some brass, some new purchases in the 90's

we are exploring options for the layout including donation, selling the entire collection or selling the pieces.  Does anyone have good advice on what could be done and how to go about it?

Many thanks.

Sure.  Do you have lots of spare time and the inclination to fool with package shipments, or do you just want it gone?  Decide that first.

Most layouts are not worth the effort to dismantle them - you might wind up paying somebody to take it out of there.  That is not because they are poorly done - it is because the hobby is creating, not moving others' creations.

Take off everything you want or will come off the platform.

Get a good power saw and go to work. Cut it up into pieces that you can handle to get it out of the basement.

As for the rolling stock and engines go, you can sell them yourself via eBay and other places or have a dealer buy the entire lot. Just remember the dealer will only give you 1/3rd to 1/2 of what the trains are worth. You could also have a auction house do the selling for you. Fees are involved no matter how you do it.

Good luck.

The Locos and cars would be the easiest to sell (if that is what you decide). If you know the value of things, you are ahead of the game. If not, you will hopefully find someone you can trust.

If you want to maximize what you get, I would (assuming you have the time and computer savvy) try that well known Internet auction, as their take is circa 13%.

Most Dealers and Auctions will take MORE commission, but the process would likely be quicker.

You could also list it on this board, which has a buy/sell forum or take the stuff to a local show/swap meet, depending on your location. There are several of these around the country at various times of the year. If you give your (Denver also?) general location, I'm sure some here can help with what's out there, where, and when.

This is sort of the Reader's Digest version!

Take Care,

Simon

The layout is probably not worth much.   Brass rail is no longer used much.   Everyone wants nickel silver or steel rail.   Brass tends to tarnish and loose conductivity on the surfaces.    So the trackwork, beautiful as it might be, might not sell at all.

someone from the local O Scale (2-rail) club could give you some ideas on the the equipment.   Or as you say, you may want to donate it to the that club if your father was a member.    If you think about that, you might caveat it with they have to remove EVERYTHING from the basement and leave the place in good order.   That way you might get the layout out, even if no one is interested.

Even though dealers only give you 1/3 or less "what it is worth", that is misleading.   It is only worth that much to the dealer.    They are going to be stuck with the same problem you have, how to sell it and how long it will take.   They give you the money up front with no fuss and they may take years to move enough stuff to start to profit.   Much of the older stuff has to be cleaned and refurbished for a dealer to sell as opposed to a private individual selling "as is".    So the dealer has work to put into it, and in most states must pay personal property tax on his inventory which this becomes.    So the price offer from a reputable dealer is not stealing or cheating you, it is realistic for him to stay in business.
