I'm seeking advice on a smoke unit, and the most appropriate sound board, I can put in a scratchbuilt Superstreets 18 wheel tractor trailer.
Over the past two years I've made several tractor-trailer rigs for Superstreets roads, each, in my opinion, progressively better than those before, experimenting as I go. I'm about ready to start my "ultimate" SS 18-wheeler, in the sense that I will try to achieve all those goals I originally set: smooth running, very slow speed, sound, and smoke. The speaker and all electronics will go in the box trailer. The drive motors and gearboxes, too, are in the trailer, leaving the cab empty -- for a smoke unit.
I need to cannibalize two parts to complete this truck - a sound board and a smoke unit.
1) What is the most "trucklike" diesel sound board out there? Aftermarket kits are certainly an option, but but I'm also willing to buy an a diesel loco (used if possible) to get the right sound. None of my current diesels sound remotely like a truck. I'm not sure if any loco does, but I thought I'd ask. I know if I install a sound board made for a loco it won't sound exactly like a truck, but among choices available, what would be closest?
2) What is a good fan-driven smoke unit to use? It has to fit in the cab of a 1/43 or 1/50th scale diecast tractor: I have about 2 inches length by 1.5 width by maybe 1.5 high at most. My plan is to mount it in the cab with it blowing through a pipe that exits the rear of the cab where the exhaust pipe(s) would be. Anyone know a source of good blowing smoke units and the model number for a particularly small unit? I know the unit from a recent (2011 catalog) Lionel U-30C is both good and will fit, but that's an expensive unit to cannibalize, and probably pricey even to order the part. I'm hoping something older would work as well, something I might find at a swap meet . What would folks recommend?
Appreciate any advice I can get
