I was by my Not So LHS today and picked up this AF-O loco shell. I don't have an AF motor to put in it but I do have an extra Marx mechanical motor that I might be able to fit in it. Making it a Flarx?

I think that would make a dandy locomotive. There is probably enough room you could do it without any modifications to the shell, in case you ever find an original motor for it. Make sure you set the motor up so the key comes out underneath the running board, and use a wire running back to the cab to operate the brake so you don't have to cut a slot in the boiler for the lever.
It would certainly be better looking that the awful FlyMarNel I built on a dare using an AF 303 shell, Marx motor and Lionel truck:
Sorry you guys had to see that...
very nice project guys.
You have a Type XX sheet metal locomotive. Its a fairly common engine and looks like it would be a good candidate of some adaptations,

How about a MarFler?

hmmm......gonna have to keep an eye out for some of these.....just need the planets to align with my 21 turn and make a show
James, it looks like that Marx motor has plenty of power to spare under the AF hood. BTW, I don't think it looks that bad.

I keep thinking that siderods and a two wheel pilot truck would go a long ways to helping it's appearance... maybe someday I'll get around to doing it. You are right, the Marx windup motor has enough grunt to move the trains. It should... it was a tight fit, took a fair amount of grinding and trimming in the shell to make it fit over the motor. Sort of like cramming a car engine in a riding lawnmower, I suppose...
James, thanks for the tips & encouragement. Your FlyMarNel was what I thought of when I saw the shell.
Greg, thanks for identifying it for me.
Dave/Steamer, Thanks.
Southwest, I tried several combinations - most sounded like they were insurance companies..
Flarx, sounded like something Scotty would say to Captain Kirk ~ "Captain, the Flarx will implode if we keep this up!" So that's why I chose it.

James, you are an inspiration! Love the stuff you do with windups!
