I recently picked up an Alco RS3 lettered for New York Central. It came missing the stack. I have just fabricated a new one but was wondering if these typically had screen over the top or was it just an open oval tube? The box says RS3 but the stack is off center more typical of RS2s. Given my knowledge of diesels is fairly limited I wouldn't know the difference.

RS-2's and early RS-3's came with air cooled turbos with the stack off center and lengthwise to the car body.   When they were replaced with water cooled turbos the stock was mounted on the center line and cross wise to the car body.

As far as I know they did have screening over the top of the stack in both arrangements.

Thank you Stuart. That will help alot. This stack is rectangular. Would the inside follow the outline of the outside as if it was a simple sheet metal structure or was there a round or oval pipe inside the rectangular box? I ask because some of the models without smoke seem to have simulated oval opening at the top. In some pics it seems there is a lip extending slightly beyond the lip of the rectangular top. Would this lip be the screen frame covering the whole stack?

post script, after looking at more prototype pics I appears I have a wide latitude on how to make the screen. They all look a little different.
