What's with the photo of a freight train?
It has been stranded for 24 hours, according to the piece I read just now, on the MSN page.
Here is the story as reported by Fox 12 Oregon.
I imagine UP will run a set of engines to the Amtrak and "back haul" it to nearest destination for passengers to de-train. Last report I read stated alot of parents have/are running out of diapers , but worst, is poor/no cell reception (oh the horror )

At least they did not show a Bus or Airplane,
And all the cars in the freight train were all the same, like a passenger train, all cars look like each other car.
I wonder if the onboard poop-tanks are reaching capacity? In the old days when the toilets dumped on the track beneath a train stranded for any period of time will begin to stink because of that "feature". I'm sure most here remember the signs above every toilet that said "Do not flush while train is standing".

At the last radio report here in Oregon a few minutes ago, the train will be either back hauled to Eugene or to Portland. My fire chief lives in Sisters Oregon which is north of where this happened and they got 3 feet, yes, Feet, over night on Monday morning. So if someone is in the Oakridge Oregon area, there could be some chain sawing and snow-blowing going on!

I wondered the same thing, but it is actually a picture one of the passengers took from one of the Amtrak cars.

The train is isolated in the mountains, cant get there from here. So the easiest thing to do is snap a picture of the closest rail car showing the snow on it. The train has trees down in front of and behind it. So its going to take time to get to it, and these are BIG trees.

One of the passengers has reported that the snow is too deep to step off the train "for a breath of fresh air".

And that's my friends is how we know that we are getting old! (Dare I say??? Don't haul me to HR now! LOL!) Because when we were kids, no matter what the depth of the snow was, the snow was never "Too Deep or Too Cold!" LOL!!!
hope the bar car was open...

In fact, the UP "rescue units" with a Jordan Spreader, is now towing the train backwards to Eugene, OR, which is down the Cascade Grade from Oakridge, when the Amtrak train struck a downed tree and stopped.

As I said, this picture was taken from a passenger on the Amtrak train.

Except for 67, 72, 73, and the 77-78 blizzards that is
Who would want to step o ...oh, I think I got it...step off for some not-so fresh air since the smokers lounges are a thing of the past? At least that would a normal crazy
I've seen 30" twice in 24hrs, and 2' quite a few times. Once while at a pre-season hunt camp; "good morning"... But not while stuck unprepared on a train in the mountains.
.Because when we were kids, no matter what the depth of the snow was, the snow was never "Too Deep or Too Cold!" LOL!!!
And we walked to school five miles uphill both ways all winter......And we liked it!!

In my neck of the woods we wrapped barbed wire around our feet for traction...
I recall seeing something like this on the history channel.I know this has happened before.I thing the train was being pulled by pa locomotives.I hope no one was hurt.Being trapped in snow can lead to big problems.
Saw tonight on news the Amtrak being dragged in backwards to some destination. They did the usual talk with passengers. To hear them, you would have thought they were the Donner Party, ready to sacrifice someone for food, or wolves howling with Indians circling the train, flaming arrows at the ready.
Also made the news all the way down-under here in Australia today!! There was a phone video made by one of the female passengers complaining about not being rescued quicker. Go figure.....deep snow and in an isolated location......was she looking for an "airlift" or something???
Lucky us convicts here in sunny Queensland, Australia don't have to worry about the depth of snow 😁

I haven't read anything about the engine being damaged to the point it won't run. Otherwise I don't know why they didn't helicopter in a couple of guys with chain saws. Cut up the downed trees and let the Genesis push them out of the way. I sure there were other circumstances not covered by the news.

A helicopter into the Cascade mountains during a sever snow storm?????? Obviously you are unfamiliar with that territory.
Cut up the downed trees and let the Genesis push them out of the way.
During 3 feet of falling snow?
I sure there were other circumstances not covered by the news.
Ya think!
So much drama. If the area was so remote how'd this get there so quickly?
Oh I know, one of the videos shows a clear roadway immediately adjacent to the tracks.

What snow storm? It's over and there's a perfectly adequate ceiling for flight. And there's probably not 3 feet of snow if the train tracks and ties are still that visible. There's certainly not anywhere near that on the top of those cars on the adjacent track!
