Amtrak engines and cars ?

Please, Please, Please, remove the word "decent" from the second sentence. I truly believe that you have a complete and total emotional breakdown with the advent of the six letters that make up the word.

 

I feel that GGD makes the best single level Amtrak cars. The better more simplistic SuperLiners are made by MTH in the Premier line. The bottom line means shop around.

K-line for superliners
Atlas for heritage fleet and horizons.

The word "decent" is being used appropriately.  Take a moment and look it up.

I found a beautiful 7 car set of Lionel aluminum superliners so dirt cheap last year it was embarrassing to pay the guy.

I then picked up a MTH P-3 F40PH to haul it.

Requires two engines to pull all seven cars but nontheless I believe its a beautiful set.

What about the recent Lionel Amfleet Cars?  They are nice and much closer to scale.  Then there also is Lionel's Acela.  MTH has the Turboliner.

 

Now we need a more realistic Metroliner.  Lionel is well positioned to make this, they would need to power their Amfleets and get a pantograph on in.

 

I personally think the Atlas AEM-7 are also quite nice.

Lionel's amfleet cars are sorely undersized. They're about the same length as the MTH cars (~18"), but lionel also compressed the tube diameter, so they appear very small and also ride like high waters. Combined with the light detailing and plastic square to mimic a diaphragm, they're really not up to par with MTH's cars. 

 

Making a metroliner out of amfleets involves more than sticking motors on the trucks and pantographs on the roof. The underframe equipment and trucks are completely different. If I recall, MTH cataloged a metroliner at one point and cancelled it without making it.

What region?? Varies greatly by train.

What do you want to spend??? Money no object???

Scale or more traditional size equipment?? 

 

I like scale. But I wanted a set of Spuerliners to replicate (or part of it) the train I ride the Southwest Chief. But the full scale cars are a lot more than I wanted to spend. Got a 6 car set of NOS Williams Superliners for $150 and a WbB loco.

 

Money n object find a set of K-Line scale Superliners and a MTH loco.....It will cost you a bunch more than the $250 I spent.

 

Narrow the scope or ask about a certain model and who owns it here.  Then decide what you want if any.

 

I have vintage Amtrak too.....custom paint and decals. Williams loco....a replica of a loco I rode behind in 1974.

Here is the link for the Lionel HHP-8 set.  My engine #656 is the engine from the set.   The separate purchase engine #664 has bigger motors and railsounds.

They were made by hand in limited numbers probably twenty years ago, but often come up on Ebay or at the York meet.  They are very nicely made units, and were ahead of the curve when Elliot was making them. I'll see if I can find some photos online.

The separate purchase HHP-8 also has cruise control, it's a pretty nice engine.

A bunch of Atlas O Amtrak Heritage cars with the MTH E8 ABA diesel set makes a great combination. Though I REALLY wish Lionel would make Legacy Amtrak E8's.

If you are looking to buy now, I would suggest the mth fp45 while there are still some left in the marketplace. For electric, the atlas o aem7 are hard to beat along with the ge B32-8 and horizon cars. The Lionel superliners beat the mth in looks however mth has made the superliner into Amtrak paint schemes.

Oh and mth for the turboliners as well!
K-line for the F40 in phase III paint scheme.

And I know why you wish Lionel would make those Bill!
