My wife and I sashayed over to Arizona for a couple of days of relaxation, and I arranged to have lunch with Jonathan Peiffer, who posts here as GG14877.  We had exchanged an occasional email over the last couple of years, so it was already established that he and I would probably get along well.  What a fine fellow he turned out to be.  We had a very nice visit over fish & chips and a very cold beer; then he took me to see the Paradise & Pacific hi-rail club layout.  They really have a nice place and a good layout for running trains, thanks to a wealthy land owner who funded a trust to create and maintain the McCormack Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale.  The railroad park has some prototype equipment on display, a scale train to ride on, and a beautifully built and maintained building housing three model railroad club layouts (and a shop area for each layout).  It's well worth a visit for anyone going to or passing through Phoenix.  It's first class.

Jonathan is a generation younger than I am, and we grew up on opposite coasts, so we had an interesting discussion comparing the quite different train watching experiences of our respective youths.  There was still plenty in common, as railroading has so much that's universal.  While we were at lunch, we lifted a glass to Scott Mann, having additional common ground in our admiration for Scott and Sunset/3rd Rail/Golden Gate Depot.

This Forum has facilitated the formation a lot of friendships among O gaugers, and I am pleased to have made another one in Jonathan.

Tom:

I believe thank making new train friends is the number 1 reason this Forum is so effective. I have never met Jonathon, but have corresponded with him in the past. I always took him as a super guy in our hobby.

I have made so many friends within this Forum that are long lasting. Glad you had a chance to meet Jonathon and have added him to your Forum friends list.

Getting together with other train types is one of the big advantages of being on this forum. I just wish I had the time to do more of it.

I'm happy to read that you guys had a great time and I too find it interesting to talk to folks of an earlir generation of train watchers. Their first hand observations are of a world I normally only read about.

The best time in the world for train watching is when one is  young, free, with their  main concern in life being not to be late for dinner.

Tom,

It was wonderful to meet you in person and share a few hours talking about the world's best hobby.  Your real world experience on the Santa Fe was fascinating and the cold beer sure helped offset the 105 degrees or so it was outside.  Looking forward to getting together again!  What amazes me so much is how friendly and hospitable the people of this forum on when there is a chance to meet in person.  Thanks for looking me up on your trip out this way!

Brad,

I have a run day on Saturday at the Paradise and Pacific.  I'll shoot some photos of the layout for you. It changes every week now.
