It is just a switch position on the loco for 2R/3R. The axles are split and the 2 pole switch engages or disengages the center rail and how the wheels pick up voltage from the outside rails (polarity switch).
For diesel there is also an axle set that allows you to switch from scale to hi rail wheels. G
Mr.Muffin, glad to see you grabbing a scale set here- they are awesome - however, they do not come with 3-rail wheel sets- MTH carries these and it is a very easy swap out. There are 4 screws per truck block to remove the bottom plate- then just pop the axle/wheel sets out, and add the hi-rail. Then re-attach the plate and you are good to go.
