I am looking for pictures or videos of MTH's 2003 version of the Premier Southern Alco DL-109/110 diesels.  I am considering ordering the current set that is in the 2012 Volume 1 catalog and I wanted to see what MTH's first effort was like in the Southern paint scheme.  I tried searching the forum and came up empty handed.  I also tried Youtube, but only found one video of a New Haven version.

Thanks!

I will also take photos or videos of the other roadnames that MTH has made.
Sorry, this is the only picture I have, as you can see #50 is on the end.  Personally I think MTH did a decent job.  Santa Fe had one DL109.  They modeled it as it looked after the lower headlight was added.   Later MTH did the single headlight version and along the way there are some that are incorrectly numbered for Santa Fe.  I have never measured it to see how accurate it comes out, but I have compared pictures and it seems reasonable.  I could point out some issues which may be Santa Fe specific but considering this is all there is it doesn't matter.

On the layout it is a good looking engine. Click on the picture to pop it out, you can see it a little better.

Page 104 has a picture

It takes a little time to load the MTH catalog.

One more thing, most of the time the MTH catalog picture is MUCH worse than the model.

As large as the lower headlight is, I wouldn't be surprised if like Santa Fe, the headlight wasn't added later.

Thanks Marker.  I had found the original catalog listing previously.  I was hoping that MTH had put the second headlight on before it was produced as sometimes things are adjusted and corrected before production begins.  As for whether the original Southern prototypes had the lower headlight or not as-delivered, I have yet to find a photograph of one without it.

I have seen these and they do have only the one headlight (no Mars light).  I am not sure why MTH made these without the Mars light, they just look wrong that way, especially since they made some other road names with the Mars light (two headlights)!  It is for this reason that I have the PRR version with two headlights custom painted in the Southern scheme.

MTH made a similar error with the Seaboard E6 set that they made with a Mars light (two headlights) when it should only have one headlight (no Mars light).  Again, it just looks wrong and it does not make sense since they made other road names with one headlight!

I can accept minor detail errors but the one/two headlight issue is a deal breaker.  And it makes no sense when they obviously have both versions of the shells available.  I guess you could modify a one headlight version to add the Mars light but you really could not convert a two headlight version and remove a Mars light without major surgery (you would be better off repainting the correct shell)!

At the time when I originally posted this more than a year and a half ago, I was looking for more information on this particular set as MTH was getting ready to release the reissue of it.  A short time later, I saw the newer model in person and thought it looked nice, but opted to not get a set at that time.  I would like to have a set in the future as they are neat looking locomotives.

Bill,

Did MTH get the newer set right with the 2 headlights?  The earlier version was lettered "Ponce de Leon", did MTH put a train name on the newer set too?
