Here's an older fan type smoke unit. I picked up a whole bunch of these; they all appear to be new-old stock. The only markings are SS100, which I assume is a part or reference number, and a date of 97-11-19, which presumably means they were manufactured in November 1997. No manufacturer's name anywhere. They look a lot like Lionel units, or perhaps K-Line. Anyone recognize the SS100 or other identifying features?

When I get time I'm going to give each one a full Mike Reagan upgrade, test it, and then sell them.

Those look like MTH Protosounds smoke units, with the two resistance heaters, and the printed circuit. If the smoke unit plugs into the board, and the white plug goes to track power, that is what I think it is. A couple more photos of different angles would help. If indeed they are MTH Protosounds smoke units, LMK if you would like to sell one or two. Thanks!

Bingo. I took a look at the smoke unit on a PS-1 engine I had apart on the bench for something else, and sure enough, it's identical. Even the date, which must be a patent or revision date rather than actual date of manufacture. It hadn't occurred to me that these could be MTH units, I guess I just assumed that an MTH unit would be marked MTH. Kind of embarrassing, really, when I actually had one staring me in the face on that engine that I had apart to fix the shell.

Guess that makes me lucky; I figured I was going to have to put a bunch of work into these things and it turns out they are good to go as is. That makes me think I might just upgrade the smoke in some of my older engines that have Seuthe or puffer units.

Thanks for the info, Luke and romiller. Luke, I'll get back to you on selling a couple.
