If you notice, these were advertised as having separately applied builder's plates. When manufactured, however, they were missing the builders plates. Lionel will sell you the builder's plates on their parts website. I just installed them on my Rio Grande mikado. It looks MUCH better.

The omission was a factory error. When those engines were new, Lionel would send you a set of plates, free of charge, under warranty. I can't remember if they asked for proof of purchase or not; I imagine they did. I still have mine in the bag uninstalled, as I planned to repaint my Mikado for Milwaukee Road. Now that Lionel is making the Heavy Mikado in Milwaukee Road, I may just leave the other one in Rio Grande.

At least then you can make sure they are right side up. I have a K-Line Big Boy where they are on it upside down. But this is good to know when I go to get one of these.
Ah, yes. K-line made some of the best Mikado's ever at a great price. I have a Pennsy and a C&O.
