Specifically which "locomotive projects" are you referring to?

Actually, I was thinking of non-profits in general.  But loco projects, I can think of two:  The ex-4-6-0 in Long Island, and the PRR 1361 disaster.

Actually both of the locomotives you mentioned went off course as a result of mismanagement of TAX PAYER funds, and NOT "private donations".

And it's my understanding several more new steam locomotives are under construction, of every size, shape and era (including a Claud Hamilton 4-4-0, one of my favorites!).  The only new steam locomotive I know of here is Central Pacific 4-4-0 #63 Leviathan.  Not a complaint, just an observation... though I seriously do love British steam.  (Continental steam, too, but Britain stands out.)  They have an elegant and slightly mysterious air about them.

Anyone think Tornado will ever visit the US like the Flying Scotsman did?

The 1361's boiler is still intact. That whole project was a study in blatant incompetence and mis-use of funds. They spent over $3 million on that locomotive and it is still a disassembled bunch of parts on the shop floor. To put that in context, we spent "only" $680,000 to put the 765 back to like-new, roadworthy condition. However, ours was not a "federal" project.

By way of example, I created this animation some time ago showing the differences in appearance from two separate images.

Hi all this is my first post here, but I thought that you guys should know #611 may be returned to the rails. The Virginia museum of transportation has been taking care of her indoors, they have a survey up on their site about returning #611 into service (basically investors won't "invest" in restoration unless there is public interest). Look up "Fire up 611" on google to get to the site.

Wow that was a mouthful lol, glad to be a part of the forum!
