Well, I finally got my GTW car the other day, and must say that I am quite impressed! In fact, so impressed I have another ordered from my local hobby shop. The new design trucks are better looking than I initially thought from the pictures I've seen, with thinner profile wheels besides the thinner truck frames. Now, I do have a few questions that I need answered. I know this first one might sound dumb, but.....the car comes with a small bag with what looks like possibly two bulkheads.....is this correct? Also there are two more little parts that look like either handles, or long airhoses????? Now you would think that Atlas could provide a note detailing what these are for......... I've seen plenty of these cars out at the Arcelor Mittal Indiana Harbor West plant (old LTV), but they always have the covers on, so I've only seen the older Evans cars uncovered. Now, has anybody put Kadees on these yet? From my observation, there isn't a heck of a lot of plastic to tap into for mounting Kadees. I always use Athearn pan head 2-56 truck screws (HO) for Kadees. These coil cars do not have a pad to mount the new ones to (like on some other Atlas O cars), so I'm a little bit leery on possibly damaging the car. I might just leave the Atlas couplers on, and cut the trip pins off...... Thanks toall for comments and suggestions.

I saw some sort of Union Pacific car last week in the LA basin which I haven't seen before. Wish I had got a picture but didn't. All I got was a glance over a fence while going 70 mph. It looked like a flat car with some sort of rectangular gray domes, with UP logo printed on each. Any clue what they transport.

R Nelson,
You are correct, those are in fact bulkheads. They are used to keep the coils in place inside the car while in transit. As far as the little black pieces, I have yet to figure those pieces out myself? I used to load these cars in the past for a living, {overhead crane man} and they are spot on correct. Atlas O hit a home run with these cars, IMO

I wish I had more useful information, but count me as a third person who has yet to figure out what to do with those air-hose looking parts.
I got all 4 of the South Shore Coil cars. Saw these frequently running by my neighborhood growing up. These were must-haves!
I agree with what has been said about Atlas' products as of late. Between these, the recent Trinity hoppers and the Trinity 17,600 gal Tank cars, they really do have the best rolling stock out there right now. Wish they weren't so expensive, but I suppose that's the price you pay for the added details.
Okay...glad I'm not alone in my query...LOL! To Phill, the car you describe sounds like a UP shop built coil car made from no longer needed flat cars. I see these quite often at both Arcelor Mittal plants in NW Indiana.
I kind of figured that the two flat pieces were bulkheads, and today while out at Arcelors' Indiana Harbor West plant, took a good look at a few of the GTW cars. I thought perhaps that these two in question parts, were the extended airhoses for the ends, but these pieces just do not match up to the prototypes. Sooo......I am back to square one, so to say! If anybody finds out what these are, please let us know....... I might shoot Atlas an e-mail on this. You'd think since Jerry Kimball from Atlas is a member, that he'd chime in, but.......? BTW...these are really great looking cars! I take it that the bulkheads are movable, or are they fixed? Thanks....

CN Hogger.....Thank you for the picture. To be honest, I did a quick look over of the car shortly after getting it, and really did not take a thorough look at the car to see just how things fit. The photo does clarify things, and yes, Atlas could have provided a sketch of how these parts fit. I may put Kadees on mine, not sure yet, as the thin mounting pad may make tapping new holes difficult at best....... If anybody has put Kadees on the coil car, please post about any issues doing this. Thanks again to all whom have provided some insight....
I'm thinking with the trip-pin removed and the 'air hose' painted black it might look more correct. Have you thought about just using Kadees with the Atlas box? I tried it on one of the recent Trainman bulkheads and it worked OK.
CN_Hogger
CN-Hogger.....I may try that. I've never used Kadees in an Atlas box before, but will look into it when I get working on the car (weathering, painting trucks, etc.). Any Kadees that I put on cars with airhoses, I cut the KD trip pin off. The new Atlas coupler trip pins are a bugger to cut off with any side cutting tools (Xuron tool, Lambert Rail Nippers tool, etc.).....these things I swear are hardened steel! I may look at the KD 746 extended shank to see how that looks, otherwise I will just go with the 740 or old style 806 coupler. Do the couplers need modification to fit the Atrlas boxes?? I do remember reading a post on this matter, but cannot recall just what was mentioned. Thank you once again for your info.!
