I am considering purchasing the double truss bridge by Atlas to either swing up or lift up out of an opening I will have in my layout rather than having to duck under. My question is how does this bridge install on the layout. I assume it cannot just set on top of both sides of the opening because the track on the bridge would be higher than the track on the layout. Is that correct and if so then how do you install the bridge so the tracks meet up?

I use the bridge for a duckunder; I am not sure how well it will hold up to repeated removals. It is good as a bridge, but I wouldn't want to use it as a door.
Susan Deats has successfully modified the Atlas bridge to open up for a walkway. See this link:

We offer bridge shoes that will compliment this as well as other bridges. The following is a link to the bridge shoes:
DaleHardy, You may find this helpful...
The entire length of the bridge was inset to the thickness/height of its horizontal bottom beams...
...its track was then level to the layout, the Atlas 2-track bridge having been inset to accommodate that.
The bridge supports and abutments are from Scenic Express.

the abutments are made of poplar wood. spray painted with a sandable primer to remove the wood grain. lines where scribed into them to simulate concrete joints. the bridge shoes are from Keil Line which is now Scale City Designs.
Nice work on the draw bridge, Mike.

Poplar is a good wood to use. It's classified as a hard wood, rarely has any knots and is a very 'smooth' wood so easy to finish, and inexpensive.
Another install, lift out.
I had a couple of those bridges on my last layout. I had them hinged to swing up so you could enter the middle of an around the room layout. I did this by pulling out the steel inserts about an inch and attaching a hinge. At the other end I attached a V shaped piece that would lock into a similar V shape in the abutment. This worked great for quite a few years and then I changed the layout and did away with bridges so I don't have any pics.

Nick,
Didn't realize how hard this bridge was to find. I will probably end up going with a bridge made b y MTH. Only 30" long but that will still work for me.
There were several For Sale at the LCCA/TCA Train Show in Crown Point last weekend. Andy will have one kit at DuPage on December 10. If I were looking for one I'd at least put a message in the Want To Buy Forum. I concur with Nick, anyone selling or looking to buy ought to have their Internet address in their Profile. You are right about them being difficult to find. This dealer's website says they have it. I don't know anything about them.

At 8AM this morning a dealer in Building 4 at DuPage had three kits For Sale. John in Lansing, ILL

Are these bridges new or used? If they're used does he have any pictures? What price is he asking for them?
They were new, unopened. A few 'push' marks on the carton. When this subject came up, I posted I would be going and got no response. At which point there was no reason for me to look at the price. Several forum members were at the show and I am sure any of us would have been glad to pass either a phone number or an Internet address to the seller.
If I want something I put an entry in the Wants or Trade section. I don't see any posts for someone wanting this kit.

I agree the double track version is next to impossible to find and I needed 2 of them to span my river. What I did and what others might consider is to buy the single track bridge and then look for the add on kit. This turns the single track bridge into a double. It really doesn't take the much more time to put this together as an add on than it would have if you found the double track version.
"Monsoon" posted photos of a very nicely weather bridge, but why does it have those additional piers under the truss span?
Pardon my ignorance, but was this bridge only available as a kit....or was it ever sold already assembled?

Because it's in Imaginationland.
FrankM, aka Moonson.
They come up fairly regularly on eBay.
I have never seen one assembled, but that is hardly conclusive.
