I have 29 Atlas turnouts on my layout. Some of my larger engines hit the frog point and "jump" when going through the curved (turnout) direction. I determined the guard rail (opposite) the frog does not guide the wheel away from the frog's point...the gap between the guard rail and the outside rail is too wide.

My solution was to move the guard rail as close to the outside rail as I could. This involved removing the turnout from the layout, removing the guard rail, drilling new holes (actually elongating them) and remounting the guard rail using epoxy to hold it in position. The solution worked!!!

My next approach will be to try placing a brass or plastic shim between the guard rail and the outside rail. Removing the turnouts from the layout is a HUGE hassel. Not all the Atlas turnouts have this problem...must be a quality control issue.

Question: Has anyone using Atlas turnouts had this problem and did you solve it another way other than what I did?

Rockyroad,

I had the same problem with MTH Real Trax and here is what I did to solve the problem. Removal of a problematic switch is not necessary. All of the 14 switches on my layout have the change shown in the sketch, and for the past 6 months of operations there have been zero derailments.

I do not know if the guard rail is removable on Atlas switches, but my fix can be done without removing them. Use small clamps to hold the cable tie material in place while the adhesive cures.

I had some similar problems on my old layout.  My assumption was that the equipment was fine, the switches were the problem.

I eventually narrowed it down to Lionel engines slightly out of gauge.  It started to be apparent after I had purchased two CC Train Masters.  One ran through the Atlas switches fine and the other derailed most of the time.  I re-gauged the engine acting up and everything ran fine after that.

It looks like Cesar had a similar experience.
