Atlas O 17,600 gallon tank cars Studio Shots

Good looking cars, think of coupler strength on the front drawbar add midtrain power as the big boys do with longer and heaver trains.

What do you think of the Atlas 17,360 "chlorine" cars?  Do they compare favorably to these corn syrup cars, in terms of detail and accuracy?

Thanks for the comments guys, these are all my photos, but if you have pictures you wanna share please do so. With so many paint schemes produced, many get lost and are not properly documented.

Other question:  Did Atlas put the correct wheel diameter in your 2-rail version?  (I think this prototype requires 36" 100ton trucks.)

The chlorine cars are certainly detailed and (probably) prototypical, but i won't be buying any more.  i just dont see them where I live now or where I lived before.

I will keep the three I have and that's it.

I have 1 ACFX&3GATX chlorine tanks. I was planning a paper factory many months ago,but am heding on that idea,so may sell these. I bought them as chlorine used to be used by paper factories but I guess not so much any more.

Just in my opinion,these would make nice general service tankers. I wish Atlas would put a 20,000+ tanker out there as general service.

All the Atlas tank cars weigh a lot more than the Lionel 30K gallon modern cars do.

I hope it's easier than the experience I had converting an Atlas 2-rail 8000 gal. tank car to 3-rail. It's do-able, but it isn't easy.   I suspect going from 3 to 2-rail may be simpler.

Yes the 17,600 have the pitch to the center, both ride on 100T RB trucks I don't think Atlas has had a run of the 17,360 cars in a long time, they were nicely done at the time first announced in 2004.

All the Atlas tank cars weigh a lot more than the Lionel 30K gallon modern cars do.

In three rail configuration (apples to apples) the visually excellent Lionel 30,000 gallon tank cars weigh 14 ounces, the Atlas 90 ton/17,360 gallon chlorine tank cars weigh 20 ounces.

I decided to review my other dream consist: the 17,600 tank train. I've only gathered 20 of these beauties, and I intend to get around 50 to make for a spectacular train......

 

It's tempting for me to get their new 25,000 tanks, but I think a consistent long string of the 17,600 cars would look better in the end.

I have never seen a corn syrup unit train.  Has anyone else?

I believe that the producers and consumers of corn syrup are lower volume operations that could not be effectively served by a unit train.  Twenty cars of corn syrup blocked into a 50 car manifest freight might be more realistic. 

The same goes with chlorine, caustic soda, propane or specialty chemicals.  Single cars or a few in a block are realistic.

With oil, unit trains are definitely realistic.

Wow, just looked at Google Earth.  The Cargil plant in Eddyville is as big as the town.

Any idea if the unit corn syrup trains are bound for a single destination (such as Coca-Cola in Atlanta or an export terminal) or if they get broken up within the region at a classification yard like Galesburg?
