So I’m sitting here watching RFDTV, and I’ve got a show I DVR’d about the ATSF 3751 taking a trip through the Grand Canyon.  Let me tell you this, over the past few months, I’ve transitioned from being an O Gauger only, to a major rail-fan,  thanks to these shows on RFDTV.

If any of you ol’ timers on here have led one of these beasts in the past, please accept my most humble respect for the job well done.  Hearing that thing make its way through the hills gave me goose bumps.  Of course it was backed up by a few Genesis Diesels (which I thought was a little disrespect on behalf of the 3751….no disrespect to you Genesis lovers), but still…..they had video of this beast at what I believe was high speed, and what an amazing site.  Seeing those drivers putting it down and the steam flowing….I regret that I couldn’t experience it myself.

jpos,

As information, any steam excursions operated under the Amtrak insurance umbrella will always have an Amtrak unit behind the steam locomotive. The primary reason for the Amtrak unit is to provide 480Volt, 3 Phase AV power for the passenger cars in the train. Amtrak will NOT allow ANY cars, private owned or otherwise, that are NOT HEP equipped.

The extent of me seeing steam in action has been at Strasburg.  Although a great sight, what kind of wore me out was the back and forth action of the engine pulling the train.  I know there's a reason, but to see one of these things at full speed, doing what it was meant to, is an awesome sight.
