About 3 years ago, my 4x12 layout came down as our spare bedroom was needed for an addition to our family. Losing my layout was a little bit of a bummer, but gaining a son is one of the highlights of my life, and an incredible blessing! So, with the exception of just running a train under the tree at Christmas, I've just been lurking around here, and buying something for "down the road" here or there. We just moved recently, and I now have a basement in which I'm establishing an 8x8 layout. I got my 1st loop of track set up tonight on my bench work and made a maiden voyage with my Nickel Plate SD9 and a few freight cars. Of course, the next thing I did was grab my son, and let him take it in. The smile on his face was something I won't soon forget. It feels good to get back into this hobby, both running trains, and building and dreaming. Even better that I get to experience it with my son.

Congrats, it's a great feeling isn't it? I introduced my son to my Lionel trains when he was 2yrs old. Now at 4yrs he can operate them with ease. We do not have a permanent layout as our basement is filled with "Stuff" from our previous house. But my wife is good about letting us set up the fastrack in the living room for a few weeks at a time. We've been cleaning out the basement and should be done with it by the spring time. Once that happens the layout building begins.

Wonderful story. As your layout takes shape, maybe you'll be able to share some photos. I can still picture walking into my grandparents' kitchen 45 years ago, where my dad and grandpa were sitting at the table. There on the table was some tubular track, a Lionel steamer, and some freight cars. I specifically remember the brown caboose and my immediate enthusiasm for what I saw. Thanks for triggering that memory :-)
At 60, an adopted son with a moderate disability rekindled my love for operating postwar Lionel trains, and at that point, at least, my wife was all green lights at spending some cash to get our boy into something both of us loved. Over the years he's become a bit more interested in HO, but we've got a basement full of Lionel and a boy's room full of HO, so trains are trains, and boys are boys. Thank goodness... My belief is, because of the ease of fixing and servicing postwar Lionel, he will never let go of the Lionel stuff, no matter how into HO he gets...
I'm jealous.
It's Roland been a long time since someone boosted me to see the train
Very similar to my re-entry into Lionel - sharing a model train with my young son has turned out to be about the most heart-warming and pure thing as a father I've experienced.
Congratulations on your new baby and you never lost your layout. You gained a dream of a better one and a helper to build it.

I'm happy for you! Take a lot of pictures to retain those memories. NKP for me.
Congrats! Enjoy the train time together. You will be amazed at how fast they pick up using a remote or DCS wifi to run the trains. Its awesome!!!
