The only thing that beats running my trains at home is riding real ones.
I'm in Chicago for business and have been taking the South Shore Line in every morning. It is about a 2 hour ride each way, but I love it. It's so relaxing!
I have great memories of the South Shore, but, would you believe? I've never ridden on the "new" stainless steel cars. (Not so new anymore; i understand that they are now about 30 years old.) Part of my memories include electric freight operation, with both the Little Joe's (on the SS they were always just called: "800 class") the NYC converted box cabs and even the end of the Westinghouse Baldwin electrics.
Sure wish that the North shore was still operating!
