Hi All,

On my shelf layout, I'd like to have the backdrop start out on the left as industrial, and then blend into a mountainous/outdoor/pinetree area on the right. I plan on adding a campground area where the green circle is in the pic below.

I'm wondering the best way to do this. I was going to order the two different backdrops but nothing matches. For example, the sky on an industrial backdrop might be a real washed out almost white, and the sky on the outdoors backdrop is a bright dark blue. So blending them this way won't look good.

Any thoughts out there on the best way to have the two backdrops work together?

Thanks.

Well, I don't want to paint my own sky because my goal is to make this layout totally removeable with minimal damage to the house. Hopefully, I can unbolt it from the wall, remove it, and just fill a few holes in the wall.

BUT...you gave me an idea. I can make the entire length the mountainous scene, and then cut out the buildings and just put the building scene right on top of the other backdrop!

This would work great because it would look even better if you could see some of the mountains or trees between the buildings. It would give it the illustion of even greater depth!

I'm just hoping these backdrops peel off the wall easily!

We used 1/8" masonite sheets for our home layout and when we moved we transfered it to the clubhouse leaving the block garage walls at the house in fine shape. You could paint the sky and then attach the bachdrops with contact cement to the masonite. Not too heavy and easy to handle.

Her eare some at the clubhouse. If/When we have to move, they come with us.

I would offer you a different suggestion for the industrial section. Start with a piece of gator board, like foam board but with a fiber face. comes in white, tan or black.

Attach this to your walls with velcro so it is removable to work on. Paint the entire board a sky blue color. This becomes your background layer.

I would recommend you try my 'modular building drawings'. Depending on the space you have between the backdrop and your track, you can use these in the flat or add dimension to add interest. Several of my customers have used S scale drawings partically overlayed by O scale drawings to achieve depth.

Check out my drawings at www.westportmodelworks.com . I believe they will give you the opportunity to customize the area with a variety of older industrial buildings to your style and size. Call me at 203-226-2798 if you would like to have a discussion.
