Curious ,recently bought a 2008 diesel with 4 hours run time according to dcs remote.

Charged its original battery ( double AA) with charger for 12 hours before operating engine , it started up and ran fine and shut down fine.

Checked dcs and it said low battery but was not alarmed as another diesel from 2011 i have says same thing (always did ) with its MTH original battery fully charged .

Its my understanding reading the forum that this is normal and has to do with the status of the charging circuit and not the battery.

The 2008 diesel however i figured not to chance it since the battery is 5 years old and this morning put in a newly bought BCR2 which was easy to do .

Turned on the old reliable ZW to about 12-13 volts for several minutes then turned on dcs remote  and pushed start up selected the engine and it came to life.

After it ran for a few minutes in dcs mode i checked the remote out of curiosity and it said low battery  ran for an hour and rechecked it again said low battery.

The instructions that J and W sent with the BCR2  says this "If you are operating in DCS mode (i was ), the battery status will read "HI'.

Any comments appreciated.

That's correct.

That's wrong once the BCR is charged.

The indication reflect the voltage at the 2 pin connector for the battery or BCR.  With a BCR installed and fully charged the reading should be HI because the BCR charges to the full applied voltage which is 5V.

When a battery is installed the voltage is held at the 2.5 to 2.7V range by the battery which is normal.

If the indication is low that means the voltage is less than 2.5V and reflects a problem with the Power Supply board or a battery that is going dead and can no longer hold a charge above 2.5V.

With you BCR installed is it charging?  If you turn off track power will the engine play shutdown sounds?  Is your volume reduced?  These can be other signs of a defective Power Supply board.

With a battery you should get OK.  With a BCR HI once charged.  Otherwise issue.

Same for PS-3 with Supercaps.  If you do a battery test you get a HI reading.   G

Been running it with the Bcr for 1 to 1and1/2 hours at a time with smoke and sounds on etc each session at shutdown the sounds play for 6-8 seconds .

Another Diesel made in 2011 with original AA reads " Low" also and ran same way

at shutdown the sounds play for 6-8 seconds .

Another Diesel made in 2002 but with 5v board and 1 year old 8.4 battery reads "OK" same reading as when original 8.4 battery was in engine before i replaced due to battery age.

It also shuts down like the above ones.

This one has a lot of run time.

Side Note: TIU setup.

Looking at original receipt inside the box it came in i had pre ordered 3/22/02 the tiu as a set,

flip box that opens and contained remote on 1 side and tiu in the other side

cost 179.95 picked up 11/25/02 at hobby shop .

Extra dcs remote was also on that pre-order  receipt  at 116.95 which at the time seemed like a lot compared to the boxed set with tiu but wanted extra remote for the kids who never really

gained any interest.

Still new in package .

Never upgraded the components as to date everything runs great , did replace 1 of the fuses

in the tiu i recall years back.

What track voltage do you use, and when you say shutdown sounds play, is that removing track power while engine is in neutral but running?

Also do the engines playing shutdown sounds when you remove power complete it normally, or abruptly cut off after about 6 secs.  The abrupt cutoff means the battery is getting used and probably is no longer holding a maximum charge.

The AA last 5-7 years.   G

If that's an accurate cost, you got one heck of a deal. MSRP at that time was $299.95.

Yes that is accurate.

The old stlye ZW is set to 16 volts when engine is operating around track.

When shutting down first I press direction button on remote stopping engine.

Then i press on/off button on remote .

Then i move ZW handle to off position.

Shut down sounds will play about 7 seconds  (engine rev's down noise) before going silent.

Was charged before tax 179.00 and put down 50.00 according to receipt i still have
