I would say that the Nevada Northern has set the bar for any other Engineer For A Day program. It uses a full-size road diesel (Alco RS2/3) or a decent size steam engine, a mountain grade, and some actual distance to run. One of our Amarillo BNSF Engineers took a trip to Ely and did the steam Engineer For A Day, and said nothing but good things about it. I am still thinking about doing it myself, both steam and diesel, as I would love to wind up a 244 diesel engine once again, and hear the growl, smell the raw fuel, and feel the instant performance of the locomotive.
