I have always been a die hard PRR fan as many know, but in the last few years, I have come to really appreciate the ATSF.  I guess after being in AZ for over 25 years now, it was bound to happen.

I have been a member of the PRRT&HS for about three years now and I find the "Keystone" to be an outstanding publication and it helps in my research and modeling.  I decided it was time to join the Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society and just got my first issue of the "Warbonnet" yesterday.  What a fascinating read.  A great decision.  Looking forward to learning so much more about this well managed railroad.

Interesting idea! 

Right now the truck is in need of restoration.  I've owned it for 25 years and drove it up until 2006 when 3 valves got frozen from old gas and I bent three rods in the process.  This is the truck when it looked its best and a few more current images.  I lack two of the key ingredients to go through it for now - time and money.

I should get an overall picture of it now.  The paint has faded, the tires are shot, the radiator is shot, needs a new gas tank, and finally new brakes and electrical.  Honestly not that hard to do on this vehicle as I tend to keep it mostly stock.  However, I think I'm going to drop the "Stovebolt" 6 for a small block Chevy for ease of maintenance and readily available parts.  That means upgrading to 12 volts, and changing out the non-synchro 4-speed for likely a Muncie 4 speed.  I'll miss the floor starter pedal and the double clutching, but I'll be able to drive it more confidently knowing that it is complete working order.

A diversion from the topic to be sure, but a hobby that I hope to get back to someday!

If I owned a historic civilian vehicle of any kind, I'd probably paint it for a RR (or Railway Express if it was a delivery vehicle).

As for historical societies, I joined the ET&WNC one a couple of years ago. I wish I'd done it long before, but I was able to buy all the back issues of their magazine.

Not exactly apropos to the PRR/ATSF thread, but as we have often said before, many of us train-nuts also tend to be car-nuts. So I am using the neat truck project posted by Jonathan as an excuse to post some pix I posted to the toy trains group on Yahoo a few years ago before I joined this forum.  It might have shown up here back then or some of you may have seen this "barn find" on the yahoo list or on the old car mailing list H.A.M.B. already. I think it is cool enough to share again here even though my trains are American Flyer and my old cars are Ford Thunderbirds.  The color is even reminiscent of the PRR.imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

It appears that this cool train hauler was originally out of Seattle where I grew up.  We were 100% American Flyer and Marx back when we lived in Seattle in the 40s and 50s, so I can't say that we were ever at this shop although my Dad extensively out both Lionel and Flyer back in 1947 when he decided on Flyer. We lived in Burien not far from Sea-Tac in the early  50s, but I think Dad did his shopping at the big hobby/train department of the Bon Marche or at the big Sears that was near his work at the Seattle District office of Ford Motor Company.

No matter, even as a Flyer guy, I still would definitely drive that panel truck just as it was to train meets if it were mine!  I think it went to one of the big collector car auctions not long after the posting on H.A.M.B.  Probably lowered, repowered and painted yellow by now.
