OK lets vote about the Radiators on the Big Boy

On second thought can I make that a strawberry shake? And super-size them fries!!!

Prefer Radiators
Interesting that Vanilla Coke and Fries is outpacing the rest. I would have thought Vanilla Coke with Radiators should have been on the list as well.
I'm waiting for the "as restored" version of #4014. Will probably have to pay through the nose for it, but I don't care.

I am surprised you would shell out for a Big Boy. Most of what I have seen you bring to the club are diesels. I believe you brought a Santa Fe Northern and Blue Goose once but you rarely run steamers at the club. But then again, I have not been around much due to job and now my parents issues. So maybe my perception is wrong.
This is rather like the recent Crimean referendum. Will the results be contrived so that Russia will annex the forum?

And take out the "with fries.." as this may actually be used to convince Lionel to take action. In all seriousness I think this is an important enough model that we should do what we can to help convince Lionel to offer it both ways so everyone can get one outfitted the way they want. I don't think it would be hard to make the modifications at the time of manufacture. If the poll comes anywhere near 50/50 I think its well worth doing....

Oh I have steam locomotives. Just don't bring them out much. Two are down with blown boards (ATSF Mikado and ATSF Texas) and I haven't gotten around to getting them back on line. I also have an ATSF 2900-class Northern and a non-shrouded ATSF Hudson, plus some non-command steam locomotives. The most recent acquisition is a 3rd Rail CNW H1 Northern -- nice locomotive, but delicate -- which will probably be making an appearance at the Open House along with the E4 Hudson.
I sent a suggestion to MTH that they offer an "as restored" 4014 in Premier, Rail King Imperial, H.O. and S and coordinate the release with UP's anticipated completion of the restoration. They thought it was a good idea, but I don't know if they'll run with it.

With Radiators
Without Radiators
With Fries and a Vanilla Coke
There's something a bit wrong with this poll.
Has anyone else added up the number of votes,or the percentages?
I make it 33 votes so far, and they add up to 115%. Perhaps my earlier comment was correct!
You are allowed to select more than one option, I didn't want someone to have to choose food over a train
You mean I really can have a Coke, Fries, and the radiator? What a deal!

Ok. I remember the Texas and Mikado now that you mention. But still not a lot of steam activity at the club. I like the idea of a coordinated Big Boy Release at MTH of the 4014. But I already have two Challengers and two Big Boys. Don't think the WAF (Wife Approval Factor) would go over well.
I just purchased the PS3 Premier Challenger and the PS3 GS4 Daylight.
Need to break them in at the club when I have time.
I am going to sell my older 2007, uncatalogued GS4 Premier MTH. But I am keeping my Challenger, 2005 release. It is the only release that included the number 3985. So I am hanging on to that one. It has the 3v PS2 board and the controls are through the tender hatches so it has the right stuff for me these days.
From what everyone is saying, it sounds like Lionel will just have to do another release when the 4014 is converted to oil. It seems as though there are too many cosmetic differences that an oil tender only can't solve.
I voted and I don't want the oil tender!!!
I never understood this whole radiator issue. In the previous 2006 JLC run there were two models produced with the modernized sans-radiator pilots, #4023 and #4024. So it's not as if Lionel would have had to re-tool everything to eliminate the radiators. Why they chose to not offer those versions at all is beyond me....
Can I get a Cherry Coke with mine?
You know originally I thought with radiators even though I would take it either way, but looking at the photos again I'm starting to prefer the no-radiator look. They don't look like they belong there...
I think I'll start a "Greenie-stick'em-a -windows" poll.
Naw, you guys made your bed...
That burger looks like Eat-N-Park? Yea or Nea? I vote radiators off the Island!

I for one, am just plain sick of Big Boy discussions of any form. What else is there to discuss on it? Nevermind ...shouldn't have even asked that question.
With PS3...

I dunno, I find it a rather refreshing break from the otherwise constant recycling of threads about NYC Hudsons and Pennsy GG1s.

I take it you have not visited the scrapple thread enough....

I don't even bother with that one

I think it stopped being refreshing the day after the pricing was released. Ever since then it's been non-stop inquiries, speculation, praise / complaints, and not to mention the OTHER beaten-to-a-bloody-pulp topic of LHS loyalty that's been stirred back up by the price wars...
Also, you can NEVER have enough threads about NYC Hudsons.
I'm ready to call this race for "Prefer Radiators". It would seem Lionel made the right call on this.
Sorry John......

I actually can't help but wonder how many of those that voted in favor of the exposed radiators actually were in response just out of spite of those that wanted Lionel to do them in the modernized version to begin with, or offer the modernized pilot as an aftermarket item the user can buy & install themselves.
Reason I ask (rhetorically) is because I also suspect that the majority of people that are buying the VL Big Boy would have bought them anyway even if it were the reverse.
Here's an idea - A small redesign to make the radiators optional. They could be included in a separate baggie in the box and left up to the owner to install or not. Problem solved, everyone's happy!

I agree with MartyE. This poll could only have a higher potential for a massive bun-fight when the results are announced if it were a 'which is best' choice between Scrapple or Sliders.

There would then be a raft of indignant purchasers complaining that 'For this money, you think they could have fitted the radiators! ' Nice idea though Nick.
But the real winner is a Big Boy with fries and a Vanilla Coke. Maybe Lionel can do a marketing tie in.
