Thanks Walt!   I was born & raised in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh and lived 3 blocks from the Baltimore & Ohio Glenwood yard.   The guys at the roundhouse would save their 7oz coke bottles and quart Tom Tucker ginger ale bottles for  my buddy Vince and I.   We'd collect them on Saturday's and cash them in at Frank Lenart's convenience store at the corner of Courtland/Lytle St.   5 cents for the quart and 2 cents for the 7 oz-but we didn't get money,  we would take candy from the jars on the counter.   Great memories I'll never forget.   In 1959 we moved to the suburbs(West Mifflin) and that party was over but a new adventure began watching the Union RR dump the slag cars at the 4 dumps in West Mifflin.

well @metalman, considering I grew up in Port Vue, I'm familiar with the places that you cited.  Agree, great memories.

Well following pennsyfan's lead, I thought I might post some of my Lionel 0-27 boxcars today.

First here is the #9388 "Toys R Us" from 1981u .

Box Car 1

The Sears Centennial celebration, #7920 from 1985-1986 u

Box Car 2

Finally the 75th anniversary JC Penny 's car #9054 from 1977.

Box Car 4

Think about these places, magnificent in their time and celebrating 75-100 years of business.  Today, Sears is gone, JCP is looking at bankruptcy, and Toys R Us is gone.  Oh well, I suppose that's progress.

Best Wishes

Don

Finally, a repainted Weaver car in the Monon Hoosier Line scheme…I need to use different doors with this scheme..

Tom, that looks great. I had one similar and ruined it weathering. I have lots of spare Weaver doors if you need the other style.

I have a few cars from west coast roads, including this UP express boxcar by Weaver.  I initially thought it was non-scale since it was only a little over 10" in length but was class BX-50-25.  I thought it was supposed to be a 50' car, but research showed it to be 44'.

WVR Express

For you west coast fans, a nifty web site is UtahRails.net.  For this car, 9109, it had a great amount of data about it.

It was built for high-speed freight shipments in Sep 1939 as B-50-25 and it was all gray.  Went through repaints (still all gray) in 1942 and 1945.  In mid-1946 it got the two-tone scheme above and was reclassified as BX-50-25.  This is the scheme I need for my layout's late 40s era.  In 1952 it got the yellow/gray Express Service scheme, and in 1955 removed from express service and reclassified XM.

Boston & Maine 2-8-0 Consolidation #2403 pulled a freight train with three boxcars and B&M caboose #104647 on my 12’-by-8’ layout.

The boxcars are Puget Sound Butter & Egg Company PSRX 1006 (Atlas O), Boston & Maine 13138 (Atlas O), and Boston & Maine 73199 (MTH). The first two are wood-sided refrigerated cars. B&M 73199 is all steel built in March 1942.

Morning!

I'm off to the Vernon CT train show, which is co-sponsored by the Amherst Railway Society, but before I go here is a photo of a project-in-progress.  It's a former Weaver 50' Mailbox car moving to Pan Am, with MEC reporting marks.   Interesting and challenging masking project.  Yet to be done:  the roof, correct trucks (searching) and appropriate weathering.  It's a bit out of my era, but hey, I like it.  IMG_4821

Fresh out of the Great Northeastern Railway's (GNR) paint shop is my son, Chris' new addition to the GNR freight fleet, a re-painted and decaled Weaver boxcar, GNR 3076. When weathered, the result will appear on a future edition of Weathering Wednesday, the OGR thread that celebrates new things made to look old and well used. Stay tuned.

Well boxcar fans, I continue on my collection of Kline boxcars, really looking for the early 8" cars as they most resemble the Marx "deluxe" cars.  Well I liked this one, K-6409, mostly because it is a RR that I have nothing in my collection, the Chicago, Milwaukee , St. Paul and Pacific RR.  So even though this is a later 9 1/2 " car at $10 (NIB) it was worth it to add to my running stock.  Interesting note, this car was newly manufactured in 1987 and the box has a price sticker on it from "Town House TV & Appliances" with a price of $12.95, so by waiting 37 years I saved $3 !!

This panel advertises the "hydroframe" on the car.  I don't know for certain, but expect that this was an improvement added to the car to assure a more gentle ride.  Since "hydro" normally signals either water or fluid, I am guessing that this car had some sort of fluid shock absorbing mechanism added to the suspension.

Best wishes everyone, hope your weekend is going well.  Have a great Veterans Day Monday and a great week.

Good Morning Don,

Challenging is a bit of an understatement!   Masking off those rib areas to get nice clean paint color separation would be a real treat to do.   Not only that,  but then you still have the decals to apply over those same ribs.   Nice work!
