One day it was fine. The next day it was hard to slide and will not spring back right away. I do remember wiping a little bit of Coke off of it when I was at a club meeting. Someone at the club has reccommended a spray called TV tuner cleaner you get at Harbor Frieght to spray in there and see if it disolves anything. The stuff then evaporates. It's a spray cleaner for the old fashioned mechanical TV tuners, safe on electrical parts. Does this sound OK? Does anyone have any other ideas? Lionel has no replacement parts available of coarse.

That might work but I suspect you're going to need to open it up and clean it from the back with some electronics cleaner. That's been my experience with other remotes. But I have never heard of this TV Tuner Cleaner.

I've looked at the schematic. There's a lot of little parts in there that I am afraid will fall out.
I haven't opened a CAB2 up either so I don't know what's inside. Surely youre not the first person to have this issue so hopefully somebody else here will have the knowledge.
I gotta admit, I've always wanted to open up a CAB2 though and my button also sticks a bit. I'll give it a day here and see if anybody responds. Then I might open it up and see what I can see.

You're very adventurous. I'm waiting to hear.
TV Tuner cleaner is great stuff and yes it may dissolve that Classic Coke you spilled in it! lol.
It will work as described. I would try that before disassembly.
I personally would always test this on plastics just to be sure.
I gotta be honest, I'm getting cold feet after reading through this thread:

People with greater skill than I are recommending against taking it apart if possible. You also pointed this out. I'm glad I looked before I leaped (leapt?). Hopefully you can get it from the outside. I do wonder if you should hold the remote on its side or something when you do it? The idea being that it'll dissolve the sticky stuff and run down the side of the inside of the remote and stick harmlessly to the side.
Probably not a bad idea to take your batteries out when you do it. I don't know if there are capacitors in there that will still hold charge though.

I completely understand.
There are 2 types of electrical cleaners for switches. One for mechanical on/off and one for the pots that turn or slide. Pot means potentiometer, or variable resistance. Mixing them up is not good. Leaving a film ont the pots or slider switches will cause problems.
If it is dried soda pop, it will most likel take some water to disolve.
I went to Harbor Freight and they said they no longer carried TV Tuner Cleaner but they did carry 1 other electrical cleaner spray, CRC QD Electronic Cleaner. I gave the Bell/Whistle slide several short sprays and worked it in and swabbed any excess and residues out with a Q tip and now it works like new! So my CAB-2 is restored. Thank goodness because the Base 3 is no replacement.
I use that CRC stuff quite a bit at home and at work. I'm glad you were able to get it figured out and addressed! I'm still searching for a video or photos of taking apart a CAB2 remote.
