The coal fired former C&O railcar ferry that still sails Lake Michigan gets reprieve, sort of.

Since they are also screaming about it being the filthiest ship on the lakes because of mercury and other coal pollutants one wonders how long before they come after steam locos like NKP 765? Is no operating historic equipment safe?

If you put forth the arguments proving that these people are, indeed, "wacko", you'll be denounced as the most neanderthal sort of dumba--.

Trouble is, that you're right and they are wrong.  They've accumulated so much momentum in recent years that their arguments don't have to make sense; our giverment can use their misbegotten ideas to extract more and more of our hard-earned tax dollars.

Alas . . .

A couple of things to do in Manitowoc while waiting to catch the ferry. A house designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright is available to rent. It's located a short drive away in Two Rivers.   http://www.theschwartzhouse.com/Home.html   In Manitowoc, the Maritime Museum is a nice way to spend a few hours. The highlight here is touring the submarine USS Cobia.  http://www.wisconsinmaritime.org/index.php   My wife and I did both a few years ago and enjoyed our visit a lot.

You are also about 45 minutes south of the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay (www.nationalrrmuseum.org , as well as Lambeau Field http://www.packers.com/lambeau...d/stadium-tours.html

and the Packers Hall of Fame. www.packershalloffame.com .

A half hour south of Manitowoc brings you to Kohler and one of the best industrial tours I ever took through their Kohler manufacturing plant.and an amazing Kohler showroom of their latest designs.

Another hour South and you're in Milwaukee.....

Good news indeed!  Senator Durbin is an idiot.  As mentioned above, there were many, many coal fired ships on the Lakes for the last 150 years or so, and no permanent effects caused by the ash has been shown.  Most of the heavy metals in the system came from dumping chemicals or from airborne pollution.  I ride the Badger on at least one round trip each year.

Re stuff to do in WI: The National Railroad Museum in Green Bay is worth a visit, Titletown Brewery and Restaraunt (in the Green Bay C&NW train station) is also good.  There is a train shop in GB too that specializes in O gauge - GB Trains.
