Capacitors

I see on motors with brushes they have capacitors on them. What is the purpose? Protect the electronics?

How would I install caps on these sideways mounted motors with the brushes in the towers? Attach 1 end to the towers?

Capacitors are used for RF noise reduction in model trains.

The 1uf 50V capacitors go from the brush to the frame for each brush. As to how you physically mount them, any way that keeps them out of the way during operation. Keep the leads as short as practical.
