There was a very entertaining thread that closed a while ago because people began posting political cartoons.  During the discussion, I asked if anyone knew the source of the cartoon below.  It's an all-time favorite of mine that someone gave me in college but that I had lost.  The caption is a quote attributed to King Louis XIV of France some time in the late 18th century.

I finally found it; it was in the February, 1978 issue of National Lampoon.  This cartoon will be framed and mounted somewhere very close to the control panel on my layout.

Enjoy.

I had forgotten about Rev. Lovejoy of the Simpsons. Maybe not as true in the US, but in England it's apparently very common for 'the vicar' to be a model railway enthusiast.

"For Better or For Worse" by Lynn Johnston had many strips about model railroading, apparently based on her husband actually taking up the hobby.

This one is great!!!

That was an homage to Walt Disney, a past president of Los Angeles Live Steamers (1.5-inch scale), by Ward Kimball (another railroad enthusiast at Disney) and the animation crew. Ward had model trains plus some 12" to the foot scale equipment. The Grizzly Flats Depot at his home (unfortunately I wasn't able to get the model) was based on one on the Disneyland Railroad as I recall. A great cartoon. Walt's Carolwood layout was pretty detailed as depicted in the cartoon. His barn/workship is in Griffith Park in Los Angeles at the LA Live Steamers site.
