I live here and have not heard much......but they are talking about it now.

Cass RR will be restoring Buffalo Creek & Gauley #4 a Baldwin 2-8-0 for service on the line between Cass and Durbin by 2016. There are reports of track work in the area but until I hear it myself I'll hold off. I hope some of it comes to pass.......photos on Cass Facebook

I knew it was true that Cass was getting #4 2-8-0.........

the story I heard about new trackage I gotta pin down. The tender arrived in Cass today.

For use on the Greenbrier Valley and Durbin......per what I have personally been told and what the official press release by Spencer and GV&DRR.

Cass will become a cornerstone of the loop being built. The 2-8-0 will not operate on the Cass to Spruce line.....but will operate out of Cass to Durbin....the first segment to be restored.

Unless they have a lot of money to rebuild the entire Cass to Durbin line (including thoroughly rebuilding the 5 miles or so south from Durbin to Boyer that the Climax is on), I'd be surprised if the BC&G 4 ends up operating there to begin with.  Lots of washouts left, and 30 years of disuse for most of it.  To get that stretch of track up to operation in a year would be a major feat.

That may be the eventual plan, but I would think it has a much higher chance of being based out of Elkins or Cheat Bridge to begin with while the Durbin line is rebuilt.  Sad to see the engine leave Spencer, but it's probably best for both groups.

Personally, I really glad that #4 is leaving Spencer to ANY location that knows what to do with her and how to maintaing her. The Spencer folks butchered BC&G #4 in order to try and make her look like a Southern Rwy locomotive, and then couldn't keep her operational.

Good old #4 was purchased new by the Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad, and provide excellent service there over many years. I am glad that she is returning to the state of West Virginia.

I never got to see the 4 before it got to Spencer, and it was there a long time.  Of course, you have memories in service at Dundon so I'm sure your feelings towards the engine are a bit different.  I'm guessing those tender modifications done at the Quakertown & Eastern?  Certainly didn't look like that at the BC&G, and it was already done by the time the equipment landed in Hiltons for that operation.

It was sad to see what happened with the steam program at Spencer, but nothing lasts forever.  I guess short of rehabbing the track from Dundon to Widen, this is probably the best option available for the engine.

now to get some money and get that Graham County '25 back under steam...

Not only will the Greenbrier Div from Cass be rebuilt to Durbin......When I confirm some other news floating around I feel this region will be THE steam locomotive capital of the US. Some of the plans call for work on family owned land.....so I don't think it's just rumor......but I have not talked to the folks in charge since late last year.
