Ordering the new tooled Observation car for my Polar Express. Might pick up the NYC 4-6-0.
Really cool that Lionel is "standardizing" the electronics in all sound equipped cars. The hot box reefer is on my list for sure. Years ago I "rolled my own" as Gunrunner John would say and installed the electronics from the traditional sized car and an ERR board to control the feature from the remote in a scale car. I had to make a concession and use the trucks from the traditional car to keep the lighting effect...
@Dave Olson had it right.....nails on a chalkboard, but still a fun effect. I am really looking forward to improved sounds. The next step forward should be a two car vision line combo. The sounds for the overheating truck bearings should be isolated to the freight car and the crew talk should come from the caboose. I think it would be really cool for the two cars to be interactive. You could pull in the sensor track and each time the cars pass over the sensor track a new and more "urgent" dialogue should be heard. Still a cool car!
The one set that's calling my name (and I never buy sets), is the Prairie set . BUT I'm concerned that the engine-tender gap will be GINORMOUS like on the recent Scout 2-4-2 engine/tender units. Also, to look proper, that caboose should have a centered coupola. They have the tooling, and it's the same price.

I said the same thing about the caboose. It would be an easy switch. I too am concerned about the engine /tender gap. I’d have to wait to see it in person. Should be pretty easy to get even if you don’t preorder
Anyone else excited about the Halloween items, but the prices, and yes, I will complain because I buy Lionel stuff! Good grief Charlie Brown...$519.99 for two passenger cars, and $309.99 for the Eerie Vision Caboose...I am still trying to adjust to $100 cabooses! Is this the revenge of the Great Pumpkin These prices are the scariest and the most eerie! I hate to do it to my local hobby shop...there's no choice for me...I am not rich nor made of money...but will do the shop around for best pre-order prices and then evaluate budget with PE items.
I would have likely gone for Vision N6b but I got burned on the color of the last one.
I have always admired Berkshire locos, especially those sporting the over hanging feedwater heater. I have seriously considered searching for a used engine in the past. The Berks in the catalog lack that model. I always enjoy paging through the offerings even if I am not shopping.
The best deal on Christmas Trains was The North Pole Cocoa Milk Train Legacy Set 2422070 a full Legacy 4-6-0 with scale cars which negotiates O36 radius. I have a small layout and this fits my needs. It is in the back of the catalog page 153.
I noticed that the catalog rendering of the new CSX ES44AHs (both the YN3 and Heritage Units) seem to have different trucks than the other ES44s. Is Lionel finally adding the GE Radial Trucks to their CSX ES44s?! Someone please confirm in the comments. Maybe sometime (next year, maybe), Lionel could make a BNSF ES44C4 with the correct truck sideframe details. Also, Lionel could add the GE Radial Trucks to future CSX CW60ACs.
Does anyone know if someone will be doing a RF&F Berkshire as a custom run? From what I read, they were very similar to the NKP and PM Berkshires.
Will American Flyer be a separate catalog, or nothing for 2024?

I noticed IVR2 and the Universal track sensors are listed on the LCS page. Are the being reintroduced?
I really like the U28C. I might preorder a Conrail 6530 and Penn Central 6533.

I'll be honest, didn't even look at those pages, but that would be huge for me! LCS is going to play a big role in my next layout.
I really like the Hiawatha North Pole Engine and Cars. With the prices of the Berks...I may actually go back and preorder the F-19 Pacific in RF&P.

Are the cars not Green and Yellow...the engine looks black, but the cars look green.
My initial 2024 Big Book wishlist in order of priority w/ list prices:
Pg 60 - 2422080 Atomic Energy Commission Set (GP9) - $1000 + 2422089 GP9B SuperBass $500
Pg 48 - 2433610 E6 GM AA set $1200 + 2433619 E6B SuperBass $500

Pg 115 - 2428220 Bob Ross sound boxcar $120 + 2430050 Bob Ross water tower $60 + 2429080 Bob Ross building $130.
Who doesn't love Bob Ross?!

I love Bob, and what a nice man he was. Just earlier today we watched an episode of "Best of the Joy of Painting" with Bob painting a forestry swamp on our local PBS station...and told my wife I wish I could find someone that talented to paint the basement walls in Bob's fashion...what an outstanding background that would be.

In my frenzy studying the Polar Express, I missed this little train set. What a neat set it is!

The very first post in this topic (posted by the folks at Lionel LLC). Just click on the link beneath the image of the catalog cover.

I noticed this set during the Ryan and Dave Facebook review of the catalog. Neat set! But I wish they could have made it a regular road name too.
Two words: Legacy Hiawatha

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, the first time I clicked on this years catalog it wanted me to enter my email to sign up for “notifications”.

Are you still looking for the caboose?
After another review, I’ll throw this addition onto the list: the ACME scale PS-1 boxcars are awesome. I’m in.
Lionel’s PS-1 boxcars and die cast offset hoopers are my favorite pieces of scale rolling stock.
A couple of NS Heritage units will be coming my way.
How can they have a Mr. Rogers Neighborhood line, but not produce TROLLEY?! 😂
@Jtrain posted:Looking at the Lionel 21” passenger cars, it seems that Lionel is merely repainting existing cars already made for other trains.
The only specific tooling for these 21” cars seems to be for the following:
NYC Empire State Express
PRR Broadway Limited
UP Excursion Cars
NYC 20th Century Limited
Some Santa Fe cars (full dome, others?)
Are there others?
There seem to be a few other individual cars, used generically. I am not sure if any of those have specific prototypes. They also slap domes on some coach cars.
Based on the catalog illustrations, it is difficult to tell what cars are based on what trains. But looking at the GN Empire Builder from the last catalog, for example, it looks like it has UP domes, a Santa Fe full dome, and the remaining cars from the Broadway Limited and 20th Century Limited, all painted in Empire Builder colors.
The catalog says the City of Miami set has "some additional newly-tooled coaches and combine." However, the observation car window arrangement is not correct.
@Rider Sandman posted:Darth, Lionel did a swap on the RPOs. I preordered and received the original one that was way too light blue (black roof model). It took over a year, but they built replacements. Once they arrived, I got an RA (with free shipping) and sent the old one back and it was replaced within a week. I don’t think it was a shell swap, but rather an all new car. They put them back in the catalog at the time, so they did a complete new run of them. The new ones match nicely to the passenger cars (at least the black roofs do - I’ve never seen the white roof cars). I assume (probably not smart) that everything for sale now is the corrected model. For what it’s worth, it’s a very nice car.
Have your dealer snap a pic of it next to one of the sleeper cars that are still in stock everywhere. They were right (and are also very nice). If the RPO matches the sleeper, you are good to go.
Thanks for the input/suggestion. I already did this a few years ago, but considering its been a few years, I decided to check with another hobby store that advertises on this forum. They checked their stock and told me the same thing I got told 2 years ago. The item in stock is the "light blue" version, not the "corrected" version. I asked them to see if they can check with Lionel to see if the RA's are still being offered. I also sent an email to Lionel to see if the one they are advertising in their 2024 catalog (1927352) as "Still Available" is the correct color or not. I also asked that if it is not, do they still offer a RA to swap to the correct 10 year anniversary color match. We'll see how everyone answers. Maybe Dave and Ryan on their facebook catalog review address some of these issues and more....i need to find youtube recording as I missed it on Friday.
Not gonna read back through this whole thread, but has anyone else noticed that the NKP berks have the wrong pilot on them? The C&O berks have the correct pilot for the NKP berks, but the NKP berks are pictured with the Pere Marquette pilot.
Also, the lettering and numbers on the Reading Sd45 should be black, not green, and the handrail stanchions are also the incorrect color. Small details, I know, but ones that should be easy to correct at this point.

You’re right! Hopefully just an oversight when generating the catalog art.

Ryan and Dave,
Can you please verify these errors on the Reading SD45 and correct if necessary:

Here's the proper appearance for the superbass unit #7604. Yellow stanchions and handrails, all black lettering and numbers, fuel tank and trucks look black too.
