So I took the Hudson to the local dealer - the expert was not there, but we were able to blow the whistle and ring the bell with a giant transformer - probably a Z-4000.

It was the blind leading the blind, but we found the locomotive with a hand held remote, followed the diections, found the "factory reset" prompt, and tried multiple times to do the reset on the J1e.  We never got the final confirmation, and when I got the thing home the whistle and bell remained inop.

It will run with power going throough the Commander, and the little green light responds to buttons on the remote.  It is clear that we did not reset the locomotive to factory spec, but we got all steps done - we even learned - again - that "enter" is a push of the thumbwheel, and you need a very steady finger to avoid scrolling to another selection.

Is there hope for me ever hearing the whistle and bell?

If the engine works at ll with the DCS Remote Commander (DCSRC), e.g., it starts up when you press the Startup button, fires couplers and moves, all on command from the DCSRC remote, then the engine was successfully Factory Reset.

Does the engine make sounds at all? If not, make sure to press Startup before operating the engine.

I agree with what Barry wrote...ie., if you have an engine that moves (responds) and fires the coupler when commanded to do so via the Remote Commander, that engine has been reset to factory default.

Did you try the PFA button on the handheld?  Does it initiate any sound sequence?

If you still get no sounds, here are the steps I followed, after some trial-and-error, to get my 254E (PS3) to reset to factory default so it would once again operate on my tinplate pike, which is currently only equipped with the DCS Remote Commander:

1.  Placed engine on the track of my full DCS layout.

2.  Added engine to the active list.

3.  Pressed "Startup" and waited for the sounds, lights, etc. to start up (which occurs almost instantly).

4.  Selected "Menu" on the remote

5.  Scrolled to and selected "Advanced"

6.  Scrolled to and selected "Factory Reset"

7.  Scrolled to and selected the proper engine-- in this case "Green 254"

8.  Selected and confirmed selection (at this point the sounds became a bit louder and distorted)

9.  Selected "Shut down"

10.  Turned off track power

11.  Moved the engine to my tinplate layout, and plugged in the DCS Remote Commander to power the track

12.  Pressed the "SU/SD" button on the DCS Remote Commander remote and all worked fine from that point on

I did everything up to and including step 9.  The handheld was then supposed to confirm, and it never did.

By " run" I mean that the locomotive does the same thing that it does without the Commander - it has chuff, and startup/shutdown sounds, and responds to voltage and polarity.  All I want is to add the bell and whistle.  Couplers are now scale size, and have no capability of "firing".
