Right now I’m can only run conventional because I missed out on any reasonable priced TIU’s before they went sky high. (I have the new WTIU on order).  I was able to find a working legacy cab 2 base (base only no remote).  I’m looking at Mth website diagram it says I would need a Lionel Serial 2   However I have seen other places and diagrams that don’t have the serial 2 or the Lionel LCS DB9 power cable and simply connect the cab 2 base to the tiu with the Mth tmcc/legacy cable (I have 501018. Just the older tmcc version)

what’s the point of the serial 2 component?  Is it absolutely necessary to make it work?  I will eventually be running everything through the app with the wTIU.  I don’t have plans to buy the base 3 or cab 2 remote)

The SER2 will allow the TIU to communicate with the Legacy base using Legacy protocols via the app to get most of the Legacy features of a Legacy engine.  Otherwise you will just be able to run your engines in TMCC mode.
