I saw those pictures last night in another article--- i'm wondering how deep those tunnels are--- and how will the commuters get from one level to another-- elevators or escalators? I'd hate to be down there during a power failure and the only way out is an elevator-- I suppose there will be emergency exits with stairs--

Esculators become stairs when there is no ower!

This is an amazing story.  I ride the LIRR daily.  I travel through tunnels that was built in 1910!  Truly an amazing engineering achievement!  My only issue is fix what you have!  This over budget, heavily delayed project in my mind is the wrong answer for the LIRR.  Penn Station is absolutely a horrible place.  I know most commuters dont spend a lot of time in Penn but some of who have to wait an hour for the next east bound train are less fortunate.  The funds in my could have been used to improve the existing infrastructure of the entire LIRR.   Now mix in Metro-North wanting access to Penn Station because of the LIRR moving into the new terminal in Grand Central Station you have a nightmare commute get worse!!!!  There are no plans to expand the existing tracks in Penn.  so where is Metro North going to go???  New Jersey Transit and Amtrak share Penn Station which makes the existing station bursting out the seams!  With no real plan in place this only means a nightmarish commute only getting worse.  Sorry to be down on this project but after 16 years of traveling on the LIRR and 16 more years to go, lots needs to be done to improve customer satisfaction.
