Coupler maintenance best practices?

I have a few cars where the couplers don't work as well as they should. Mostly it's an issue of them not closing when a car backs into them though I also have a car that once closed doesn't want to stay closed. Can anyone point me to a good resource with regards to coupler maintenance/trouble shooting/repair?
