Hey all! I wanted to show a few pictures of a project I am just about to finish up, I turned a rather abused Lionel 8602 4-6-4 into somewhat decent JNR C62 Locomotive, and dressed it up as the "999" from the japanese anime franchise "Galaxy Express 999". The loco recieved a lot of work, using mostly styrene, model filler, expoxy filler, and some thin metal to achieve the look. It's not perfect in some places. The tender is a rebuilt MPC slopeback tender.

Cool, always love to see kit-bashed projects.
Great modeling! Cool project. JohnA
Wonderful and creative craftsmanship! BRAVO, sir! :-)
Nice job !
Now you need to find an O scale Maytel, Tetsuro, Emereldas, Harlock... ;-)
Excellent work!

And, can a kitbashed PRR S1 and UP Big Boy be far behind?

Now, an O scale Yamato or Arcadia, THAT would be a sight to see!

Thanks for the compliments everyone! To answer a few things I've already made "Big One" from Galaxy Railways, and I definitely would like to find or make some characters from the anime for the train itself. Here's pics of Big One and it's train on my clubs layout. I'll make a seperate post on this if people want to see more pics!

The major surgery I did was cut off the pilot, cut off the firebox section in front of the cab, and cut down the air compressor equipment on the front so I could "box it in" to emulate the apperance of a GE999 C62. The loco also recieved backhead detail, LED lights for the headlight and cab light, a new Dalee E unit, and I ordered Gunrunnerjohn's MP3 universal sound board for the project. I can't take credit for the project idea, a good friend of mine named John suggested me to use this loco, he's doing a similar project using an clapped out 8206 Hudson. I plan in the near future to custom paint a couple Lionel Baby madison cars for it!

Recently I purchased a set of ten really faded Milwaukee road baby Madison passenger cars, story goes they were in a hobby shop store window for years. 8 of these cars (sans the baggage and presidential observation) were taken apart and repainted to go with my GE999 locomotive. Upgrades include new operable couplers (this required mods on the vestibules, so the couplers had clearence) replaced all the og plastic pins that held the trucks on with 6/32 screws and locking nuts, new contact rollers, and eventually LED lighting in the cars.

Excellent! I don't envy you the task of finding/fabricating arch roofs for all those cars... ;-)

I definitely thought about making/modifying roofs to match the prototype JNR OHA 43 series cars, but gave up on the idea as it would be wayyy to much work, they were simply repainted grey. They weren't seen in the last pic as I was testing the cars to see if the lock nuts were holding properly.

Heh! Well, that works, too. I suppose Hogwarts Express coaches would be something of a match as well...
One thing to consider on the lock nuts: You might wanna aim the screws the other direction. That way, in the unlikely event a nut DOES fall off, you don't have a screw falling onto the track or onto the pickup shoe frame...

Looks pretty neat!
